Town beach, Kristiansand

Monday 4th June 2012, 5.30pm (day 284)

Kristiansand beach, 4/6/12_low-res

We transited down to Kristiansand today, in the southernmost part of Norway (though still as far north as Aberdeen in Scotland). Wouldn’t have chosen to come here normally, but was invited to give a keynote speech at a conference. It’s not as dramatic as the western fjords but it’s pleasant enough, and the sun was shining. This picture makes it look like it’s got wide, sweeping sands, but actually it’s a pretty scrubby bit of beach, probably artificial. Nevertheless, the kid’s having fun, and it was quite a sunny and pleasant evening.

In the fjord

Sunday 3rd June 2012, 11.50am (day 283)

Fjord, 3/6/12

So, finally, I make it into the fjords. This is a narrow passage between the little islands of Paddøy and Hokøyna, north of Bergen on the route up to Mofjorden. I don’t really feel I did the Norwegian landscape justice with any single photo taken today, partly because of a simple lack of good light, and also because for most of the journey we were either on a boat which was moving very quickly (some 30-35 knots), and thus being out on deck was a bracing experience to put it mildly – and focusing was difficult as a result. Or, we were behind glass on the bus home. And how can one choose just one shot to encapsulate this amazing natural architecture. I know, then, that here I do resort to cliché. But what the hell.

Joe in ‘Vilvite’

Saturday 2nd June 2012, 12.05pm (day 282)

Joe, marble run, 2/6/12

‘Vilvite’ is Bergen’s kid-oriented science museum. Joe’s favourite exhibit – and, except perhaps for the big artificial stream in which one could play with sand dams and watch the formation of alluvial flows, probably mine – was this big marble run with about a hundred different little channels and toys and bells in it. Took me a few goes to get this shot, but I like it a lot.

Transparent floor, Bergen

Friday 1st June 2012, 9.05pm (day 281)

Transparent floor, 1/6/12

So here we are with the first of the backlog of pictures from Norway. On this first evening I took Clare and Joe up Mount Fløyen to see the classic view of Bergen: but this blog has already featured that so to avoid cliché and repetition here’s a strange view from a bar down by the waterside. The ‘roof garden’ is just a floor of transparent perspex or glass, three stories up. Would you sit up there? I think it would be a rather nauseating experience, to be honest.

Working on the Summer House

Thursday 31st May 2012, 4.10pm (day 280)

Summer house, 31/5/12

“Ere, mate. Dontcha think it’s ironic, like, that the day we put up this ‘summer house’ in the city centre, it’s the first rainy day in a fortnight?”

“Yeh, it’s all part of the comedy of life innit. Or maybe because it’s a Bank Holiday weekend. Anyway, sod that. I want to know why Jack ever thought that those shorts were a good idea.”

I’m off to Norway tomorrow – most likely there won’t be posts on here for a few days but you’ll get a big lump of them all at once when I get back. Including one of a fjord. If it kills me, there’ll be one of a fjord this time.

The morning dip

Wednesday 30th May 2012, 9.30am (day 279)

Morning dip, 30/5/12

Phew! What a Scorcher, blah blah… actually it was rather cooler today than it has been. I bet this pigeon frequently takes a dip in the fountain, either way. It was certainly quite civilised about it, going about it like some old geezer who still insists on swimming in the Serpentine every morning.

Mölkky in the woods

Tuesday 29th May 2012, 4.30pm (day 278)

Mölkky, 29-5-12

Even the keenest follower of this blog is unlikely to have lost a great deal of sleep over the fate of the mölkky (Finnish skittles) set last seen on Christmas Day. But here it is, providing an excuse to involve Joe, Clare and our neighbour Keith in some enjoyable physical activity out in the woods across the road, on another glorious evening. Better than just hanging round the pub anyway. (Which we did anyway, afterwards…. too nice to stay in.)

Grrrr. No comment necessary.

Robin redbreast

Sunday 27th May 2012, 10.25am (day 276)

Robin, 27/5/12

You have to admire robins. Handsome creatures for a start. And people call them ‘tame’, except they’re not – do you know anyone who has one as a pet? Better to see them as fearless, ballsy – they’ve got us sussed, I think. Yes, they’re a species you feel will do just fine.

Carriage doors, Keighley station

Saturday 26th May 2012, 3.10pm (day 275)

Keighley station, 26/5/12

Another gorgeous, sunny day. The Keighley & Worth Valley railway is visited by members of this family about two or three times a year. I know I spend enough time on trains as it is but it’s reachable on a single bus journey from just outside our house; it keeps Joe entertained; and they serve real ale from the buffet car. That’s ticking several boxes…
