Old St. Paul’s church, King Cross, Halifax

Saturday 19th July 2014, 10.25am (day 1,059)

Old St. Paul's church, 19/7/14

Two otherwise rock-solid photo opportunities were snatched away from me today by poor weather. My first plan was to do a walk in the Lakes, and even after that was cancelled due to forecast thunderstorms, a 5K run in Halifax which Clare and Joe had planned was also postponed for ‘safety reasons’ (e.g. it would have been a bit wet). Wet it was, so I fell back on this random architectural curiosity, a church that seems to have misplaced most of itself. I assumed as the result of WW2 bombing but apparently it has been like this even longer, since a fire destroyed most of it in 1930. Hardly the best photo I’ve taken — I manage to make it look even wonkier than it already is — but it’ll do.

Joe’s last day at primary school

Friday 18th July 2014, 2.10pm (day 1,058)

Riverside year 6, 18/7/14

Today was Joe’s last day at Riverside, his primary school. You may do things differently in your country but this is a significant transition point for us. And here are the rest of his cohort. I like the animation in this picture, a sense of the joy of today, as well as its deeper meaning. Good luck to all of them.

Selfridges, Manchester

Thursday 17th July 2014, 9.25am (day 1,057)

Selfridges, 17/7/14

Last day in Manchester until well into August. People seem to have disappeared from these photos in the last few days. Indeed, in the last 6 I’ve depicted nothing more sentient than a raspberry.

The turf roof, finished

Wednesday 16th July 2014, 9.15am (day 1,056)

Turf roof, 16/7/14

Poor photographic pickings today as I was working at home all day, and it wasn’t sunny. This deserves documenting however — the finished turf roof on the Calrec Audio extension below our house. It took them a while to get it done, but at least it is now complete.

Outside the graduation marquee

Tuesday 15th July 2014, 10.00am (day 1,055)

Graduation marquee, 15/7/14

None of my students are present — they all usually graduate in December — but the summer graduation ceremonies bring a last burst of life to the campus before it really shuts down for high summer. Not that there were any attendees yet present this morning when I took this shot. Not much light in Manchester this morning but the seats have caught a dim flicker.

Trappistes Rochefort 10-year-old

Monday 14th July 2014, 6.10pm (day 1,054)

World's best beer, 14/7/14

If this isn’t the world’s finest beer then I’d like to taste the one that is. Proof that God exists, at least in the Abbaye St-Remy, Rochefort, Belgium.

Raspberries

Sunday 13th July 2014, 12.10pm (day 1,053)

Raspberries, 13/7/14

Beautiful weather at the moment and it’s always nice when the garden starts to produce.

And well done to Germany, too.

St Michael’s church, Mytholmroyd

Saturday 12th July 2014, 5.35pm (day 1,052)

St Mike's church, 12/7/14

Back home. The trouble with committing (still) to do this every day is that some days, even when the light is good (warm, sunny day today) and there are opportunities to get some good shots, the technique fails. I didn’t really get any good pictures today. This one is OK, a bit of a study of shape and texture, but that’s about it.

Jomo Kenyatta airport, early morning

Friday 11th July 2014, 6.25am (day 1,051)

Nairobi airport bar, 11/7/14

I only post this early when I’m travelling, and here’s the second really early one in a week. Nairobi’s airport seems to have about fifty duty free shops and one bar/café, this one. I like this shot, particularly as I wasn’t really giving it a great deal of thought, I just captured the bar scene randomly but I like the way he’s been caught. And I was only having a cup of tea. Honest, guv.

Alessandra, at work

Thursday 10th July 2014, 3.30pm (day 1,050)

Alessandra at work, 10/7/14

Another nice reason to come to Nairobi is the presence of some of my distance learning students, including Alessandra, pictured here on the right, doing her stuff for her company, the Cultural Video Foundation — check out their web site, they do some amazing stuff. Here she is interviewing a local artist for another project. And yes, that is an old double-decker London bus in the background.
