Frosty morning

Friday 21st November 2025, 8.15am (day 5,202)

Frosty rooves, 21/11/25

The chilly snap continues: cold enough to make leaving the house an unappealing prospect, anyway, at least until later. My daily patterns are definitely shifting away from mornings: this is the earliest shot since 2nd August in fact, and that was taken in special circumstances (like, we were already on a moving ship). If I’m no longer a ‘morning person’ though, what have I become? ‘Couple of hours in the middle of the day person, as long as the sun’s out’ probably sums it up at this stage of life.

Campus spider

Tuesday 7th October 2025, 9.10am (day 5,157)

Campus spider, 7/10/25

In actuality I will estimate this creature’s body to have been about the size of my thumbnail, so you see it here at around three times life size. Impressive web work, particularly as this resides not in some hidden cranny but beside the A34 in Manchester, on the side of the annex to the Engineering Building (sorry, the Dame Nancy Rothwell Building [B]). Spiders have been around for more than 200 million years, and, I am sure, are among the many species which will outlive us, however things pan out in a future time that I will not see.

Golden fungus farm

Friday 14th February 2025, 2.10pm (day 4,922)

Golden fungus, 14/2/25

The afternoon greatly benefited from the appearance of something that has not been seen in at least a week, namely the sun. Once it came out the idea of working through until 5pm was rapidly abandoned and I went out on a walk. I know fungi don’t need the sun directly, but this little clump shone in an agreeably golden fashion as a result of it. I like the little one on its own at the top — is it making a break for independence, or being shunned by its fellow gang members?

Springbok at sunset

Wednesday 24th April 2024, 6.30pm (day 4,626)

Springbok at sunset, 24/4/24

I have spent the last three days in Namibia’s, and one of the world’s, largest nature reserves — the Etosha National Park, so it’s understandable that wildlife shots have featured. There have been many species that I have seen and managed to photograph but which, due to the strict one-photo-per-day rule, have not made it on here, and today you might have had white rhino; elephant; kudu; and the cute, teddy-bear-like rock hyrax. But I am going with these springbok simply because of the fabulous golden light in which they are bathed. My penultimate full day in Namibia.

Start of the journey

Monday 28th October 2019, 7.35am (day 2,986)

HB station, gold, 28/10/19

One of those days where I travelled quite some distance, took quite a few photos of places I had not been before, yet am obilged to admit that the very first one of the day was the best — taken in the familiar surroundings of Hebden Bridge rail station. Ah, the station in the morning — those first steps on a journey that could lead one anywhere. Until, in my case, one gets as far as Preston then has to sit out a 70-minute delay thanks to Virgin Trains not really being bothered. Which pops the romantic bubble somewhat. But at 7.35am all that lay in the future.

Autumn foliage

Monday 24th September 2018, 1.15pm (day 2,587)

Oulu foliage, 24/9/18

The further north you go, the earlier the trees turn. Those who want to see displays like this in late September, come to northern Finland. The back of the traffic sign gives nice contrast.

Will he kiss her?

Saturday 20th January 2018, 2.00pm (day 2,340)

Bench by the river, 20/1/18

He did do so, a couple of minutes later. Yes, I do have a photo of that moment as well, but there was too much flare on it and anyway they can keep their privacy in that respect.

November trees

Sunday 19th November 2017, 11.40am (day 2,278)

Trees, 19/11/17

Seems superfluous to add much commentary. A truly beautiful late autumn day today.

Platform 5, Leeds station

Saturday 4th February 2017, 4.10pm (day 1,990)

Platform 5, Leeds, 4/1/17

Once again, Leeds becomes the place to change trains when on the way to somewhere else for an evening out: but once again it was quite fertile territory for photography today, bathed in golden late afternoon light. I had a couple to choose from today but in the end went with this one due to the randomly bendy child. Like a stray piece of wind just tried to whisk him away.

Another beautiful morning

Monday 17th October 2016, 8.40am (day 1,880)

HB station, 17/10/16

It really has been a fine run of weather over the last two months and still shows no real signs of becoming unpleasant. My train to Manchester this morning was 15 minutes late and I cared not at all, just 15 minutes longer to hang out in the sunshine and take pictures.
