Frosty morning

Wednesday 7th December 2022, 9.00am (day 4,122)

Frosty morning view, 7/12/22

A cold day today. Of course, ‘cold’ by British standards is not cold by, say, Canadian or central European standards, but we notice it in our own way. Look, someone in Royd Terrace has even lit a fire.

Spring Wood, in waiting

Wednesday 6th January 2021, 11.15am (day 3,422)

Spring wood in winter, 6/1/21

Spring Wood is its name…. but it is going to feel like a very long time until spring. With weeks of stagnancy and economic devastation to come, let us at least hope there are more days with as good weather as today. If Bojo thinks I’m staying at home on such a day, he is mistaken.

Frosty fields, and Wetherlam

Monday 18th November 2019, 10.15am (day 3,007)

Frosty view to Wetherlam, 18/11/19

I worked on Sunday so I could walk today, Monday. I’m no idiot. There were reasons for this.

The picture is taken in the valley of Yewdale, north of Coniston in the Lake District. The fell in the background is Wetherlam. And an appearance for the moon, too — hiding away among a couple of similar little fluffy clouds, which is as aggressive as the sky got all day.

Birchcliffe, Hebden Bridge

Wednesday 8th November 2017, 10.30am (day 2,267)

Birchcliffe, 8/11/17

A cold and frosty morning but it turned into the latest in a run of very beautiful days. A train strike kept me working at home today and I cared not at all.

Winter rooves

Thursday 29th December 2016, 11.55am (day 1,953)

Frosty Nutclough, 29/12/16

The roof nearest the camera is that of my house. I suppose the architecture of my immediate locality is pretty offbeat, but after 15 years here I no longer really think about it. This is about as early in a day as we get sunshine during the winter, as when the sun is low, it does not get above the hillside to the east in the morning. From mid-November to mid-February each year we have to wait until the light gets round to this side of the building — then enjoy our nice, better-lit afternoons.

Frosty morning, Cambridgeshire (or possibly Hertfordshire)

Tuesday 29th November 2016, 7.55am (day 1,923)

Frosty morning, 29/11/16

Another beautiful day — as have been many over the last four months, it cannot be denied. A very sharp frost, which lasted all day, across the entire country (I saw enough of it today — I know this); but once more, cloudless blue skies. I spent it entirely either on a train or working at home, so did not manage to capture it that adequately, but here’s my best effort from early this morning, as the train out of Cambridge whisked me through some rural county or other.

Frosty rooves

Monday 23rd November 2015, 8.00am (day 1,551)

Frosty rooves, 23/11/15

Brrr! Definitely the coldest day of the winter so far; it is becoming increasingly hard to kid ourselves we are still in ‘autumn’.

First frost of the winter

Monday 4th November 2013, 8.15am (day 802)

First frost, 4/11/13

The first one I’ve seen since about January 25th, the date I skipped out of last winter and buggered off to the Southern Hemisphere. A cold but beautiful morning captured as I headed for the train station to go into work.

Frosty morning

Sunday 2nd December 2012, 11.30am (day 465)

Frosty morning, 2/12/12

Stayed below freezing all day today, the coldest day since Moscow back in March. Beautiful weather however, a glorious winter’s day. These brambles have made a break for freedom above a stone wall up the road from our house.

Frosty morning

Thursday 20th October 2011, 8.45am (day 56)

Frosty morning, 20/10/11

Beautiful morning today but a bloody cold one, with a sharp frost, clearly visible here. Well, that’s winter on the way then.

Slight reservations about posting this if only because there’ve been a lot of Hebden Bridge pictures this last few days. Off to Russia on Sunday however, to give this blog renewed international flavour.
