Garden mint

Tuesday 22nd May 2018, 3.40pm (day 2,462)

Garden mint, 22/5/18

I’ve been moving around a lot in the last couple of months — Norway twice, Slovenia, Croatia last week — but apart from a couple of trips to London there will be no more of this until into August. So expect plenty of HB, Manchester and, when the local train service allows, the Lakes. It will give me a chance to show the progress of the summer, anyway. The arrival of the first mint crop in the garden is always a welcome one, as that means it’s also home-made mojito season.

Meeting rooms, Principal Hotel

Monday 21st May 2018, 1.20pm (day 2,461)

Principal Hotel, 21/5/18

Staff ‘awayday’ at work today — so we went a mile or so up the road to the Principal Hotel. Which is rather an impressive building, I think, although apparently it suffers from various leaks. I quite like this shot because of the flash of ultraviolet, though really, that’s just a white balance issue.

Pete on his 50th

Sunday 20th May 2018, 2.30pm (day 2,460)

Pete's 50th, 20-5-18

A happy 50th birthday to brother-in-law Pete: we celebrated in Manchester and I tried not to dwell on the fact that in 462 days time, I too will reach the half-century…

End of the season

Saturday 19th May 2018, 4.45pm (day 2,459)

Poulton FC celebrations, 19/5/18

37 competitions into my football season and this was the penultimate one today, Division 1 the West Lancashire League, where I saw champions Poulton FC lift the trophy. The post-match — and post-season — celebrations are about to start here. It’s been a fun way to spend a season but it’s getting tiring and I’m a little glad we’re moving into summer: but by late June I’ll probably be missing it.

Zagreb airport

Friday 18th May 2018, 12.45pm (day 2,458)

Zagreb airport, 18/5/18

And another picture of Zagreb’s transport infrastructure to mark the end of this week here — the airport being a considerably more modern construction than the railway station. An impressive space, in fact. It’s been a good week and I will probably be back at some point next year.

Getting ready for my lecture

Thursday 17th May 2018, 4.55pm (day 2,457)

Zagreb lecture, 17/5/18

The reason I was put up for another two nights in Zagreb after the Networked Learning conference was so I could come to give this lecture at the University. A few more people did arrive by the time I started… so hopefully my hosts thought the bother was worth it. I enjoyed it, anyway. Home tomorrow.

Zagreb central station (James Bond reference)

Wednesday 16th May 2018, 1.40pm (day 2,456)

Zagreb station, 16/5/18

The conference ended today but I am in Zagreb until Friday, and transited to a different hotel in the early afternoon. My walk there took me past the main railway station, a symbolic spot for those who have seen and enjoyed From Russia With Love — the best Bond movie (yes, it is) — as it’s here that 007 meets the evil Grant –the best Bond villain (don’t argue now) — posing as a fellow British agent.

Actually, those scenes weren’t filmed here, but in Turkey: and in the book, Grant and Bond meet not in Zagreb, but Trieste. But this is just detail….

Zagreb cathedral

Tuesday 15th May 2018, 5.55pm (day 2,455)

Zagreb cathedral, 15/5/18

Sat in a room all day listening to people talk, so not the most exciting day photographically. But the cathedral in Zagreb is an imposing presence so gave me something more interesting to point my camera at. Rebuilt in the late 19th century after the old one was damaged in an earthquake.

Pigeons fighting in the rain

Monday 14th May 2018, 11.40am (day 2,454)

Fighting pigeons, 14/5/18

I’m aware this photo could have been taken anywhere, but it happens to be in Zagreb, Croatia: making this the first place to begin with Z that has appeared on the blog in its 2,454 days.

The pigeons of Zagreb, at least, the ones pictured here, may have decided for many reasons to have a fight but amongst those may have been the fact that on this late morning it was absolutely throwing it down with rain, as is visible here (and it’s not always easy to see rain on photographs unless it’s very heavy). I have been here 24 hours now and there’s certainly been copious amounts of moisture pouring out of the sky. I think there are three birds visible on this shot, but I must admit I’m not entirely sure.

The Grain Loft, Manchester airport

Sunday 13th May 2018, 9.45am (day 2,453)

Grain Loft ceiling, 13/5/18

Off I go again, to a country I have visited once before, though the city will be new to me. Where? Well, you can find out tomorrow. Look up from the Grain Loft bar in Terminal 1 of MAN and one will see the abstract view shown here, it’s not about travelling, it’s just a combination of shapes that I find interesting. It wasn’t an exciting flight…
