Smug heron

Tuesday 16th September 2025, 3.40pm (day 5,136)

Smug heron, 16/9/25

Photographically, today was definitely a ‘give thanks to the heron’ day. Had I left the house 30 seconds earlier, you might well have seen the reason for its somewhat smug look, seeing as it has just guzzled a fish almost as long as its throat: I did get a shot of the kill but it was on such a long zoom (and in the same gloomy light as all other shots in the last few days) that the quality is very poor. Take my word for it, though: this is a heron that dined well this afternoon.

Rainy Monday

Monday 15th September 2025, 8.20am (day 5,135)

Rainy Monday, 15/9/25

Some might say we haven’t had enough rain in 2025 and probably they have a point, but there’s been quite a bit lately, and today it was obvious even at 8.20am that there was going to be plenty more. So profoundly uneventful was today that this is basically the same shot as on last Monday — only without the boots and with more water outside. But I had work to do, so what the hell.

Two points at cribbage

Sunday 14th September 2025, 2.15pm (day 5,134)

Cribbage, 14/9/25

Post-Sunday lunch card gaming. Clare demanded to play cribbage for the first time in a long while. Only the Brighton & Hove Albion cards could be found. Didn’t faze her – she won 2-1.

Storm at Solihull Moors

Saturday 13th September 2025, 2.40pm (day 5,133)

Solihull storm, 13/9/25

This shot somewhat misrepresents the day’s weather, as for most of my time in Solihull today (near Birmingham, and making its debut on the blog) I walked and sat in quite pleasant sunshine. But not from between about 2.30 – 2.50pm. And the seats for the match to come were not under cover. Fortunately, it stopped, and two other big fat thunderheads that looked like they were later coming in also passed us by.

Customer feedback

Friday 12th September 2025, 5.45pm (day 5,132)

Restaurant post its, 12/9/25

This Japanese restaurant certainly solicits some kind of comment from its customers — most of its walls were like this, not just this one. And the wife (Friday Night Date) and I were very satisfied too, good food. I don’t do advertising on this blog but you might look in the High Street area of Manchester city centre if you want a decent ramen. I know this shot is overly pink but I did do my best with the white balance.

Stormy sky

Thursday 11th September 2025, 3.45pm (day 5,131)

Stormy sky, 11/9/25

Thunderstorms were coming and going all afternoon: here, we are perhaps a quarter of an hour from the next one. In response, the local rail system threw its hands up in fear and went into another one of its spasms, but I just stayed in and watched.

The tapping of feet

Wednesday 10th September 2025, 4.40pm (day 5,130)

Feet tapping, Railway, 10/9/25

Another less-than-exciting day: I am spending most of this week marking dissertations. One thing about the Railway is that it’s always had a very decent juke box. I don’t remember exactly what track was on at 4.40 this Thursday afternoon but whatever it was, this person was not the only one tapping at least one of their feet to it.

Rochdale station (unscheduled)

Tuesday 9th September 2025, 12 noon (day 5,129)

Rochdale station, 9/9/25

With the main rail line through Huddersfield closed this month — apparently it’s an ‘upgrade’ though that could mean anything — services are being routed along the Calder Valley line and adding further pressure to an already-creaking system. I was not supposed to have 20 minutes or so of hanging out at Rochdale station today, but here it is.

The tower over there has always impressed me — the building used to be a fire station, so presumably this is an observation tower, from the days before 999.

Drying out day

Monday 8th September 2025, 2.10pm (day 5,128)

Drying boots, 8/9/25

However you interpret the title of this post, as I get older the idea of a Day of Recovery is becoming more appealing. I needed it — and the boots certainly did, after Friday’s sogginess and then, two days stuffed into a pack. I think they’re feeling better after a day sat around doing very little. As am I.

Bridges and joggers

Sunday 7th September 2025, 10.35am (day 5,127)

Banks of Clyde, 7/9/25

There are thirteen people in this photo — notice the two up on the bridge heading at right angles to everyone else’s trajectory — and with the exception of the woman in pink in the background, every one of them is jogging, some more speedily than others. In Glasgow city centre clearly the banks of the Clyde are Jogger Central on a Sunday morning.
