One day’s produce – and 14 years’ worth

Monday 25th August 2025, 12.15pm (day 5,114)

Garden produce, 25/8/25

This was the product of less than an hour’s labour in the garden this morning, and there’s plenty more still up there. I know, global warming, climate change and all that, but I doubt a medieval peasant farmer would have complained about the weather round here in 2025. This has been, without a doubt, the most productive year since we acquired the allotment, thus in more than 20 years.

As it is my birthday tomorrow, with this picture I also reach 14 full years of photographs that document my doings on a daily basis. Meaning, as of today, this blog encompasses exactly one quarter of my life. There have been some times when I have felt the creativity waning, not just on particular, less interesting days but in a broader sense. But there were times like that back in 2014, or 2020, or whatever, just as there sometimes still are now. For now, I will do my best to keep it up.

Trying to make an impression?

Sunday 24th August 2025, 1.45pm (day 5,113)

Press ups, 24/8/25

Possibly she has known this guy for years and considers this just normal behaviour. Possibly they met last week in the gym and their Sunday in Bradford city centre is a first date. Possibly I should stop speculating about the lives of total strangers, but let me retain my little entertainments here and there.

Cricket landscape, Oxenhope

Saturday 23rd August 2025, 2.20pm (day 5,112)

Oxenhope cricket, 23/8/25

I’ve done quite a few ‘football landscapes’ over the years but never a cricket one. Not that I’ve changed my sporting allegiance — this was just seen in passing. While I was on my way to a football match, in fact. Oxenhope would make a picturesque backdrop for just about any sport, though.

Busking in the square

Friday 22nd August 2025, 5.10pm (day 5,111)

Busker with organ, 22/8/25

Another week that I am glad to get to the end of. There seem to be a lot of these lately, at least where work is concerned. No matter, it’s Friday evening, and there was some half-decent music down in town courtesy of this gentleman and his relatively portable retro equipment.

Guerilla advertising (presumably)

Thursday 21st August 2025, 2.10pm (day 5,110)

Feel-good scheisse, 21/8/25

I have a feeling this billboard, found under the arch that takes the railway over Princess Street in Manchester city centre, has been subverted before. I don’t see how this can be anything other than guerilla advertising; it’s certainly a valid point.

In Halifax, late

Wednesday 20th August 2025, 10.25pm (day 5,109)

A day riddled with negativity in at least two ways, each related to totally different aspects of my life. I was glad when 20/8/25 was over, but it lasted until later than most of my days do at this time. Negativity doesn’t do much for creativity, so here’s a picture of a car park. But I suppose I like the redness and seeming randomness of the pillars, and it’s the second-latest shot of 2025 so far (beaten only by the turtle on Ascension Island in April).

Laptop design work

Tuesday 19th August 2025, 8.40pm (day 5,108)

Legs and pattern, 19/8/25

Can hexagons be made to fit into squares? Clare is certainly hoping so. I believe it’s a crochet thing.

Fishing in the canal

Monday 18th August 2025, 3.25pm (day 5,107)

Huddersfield Narrow Canal, 18/8/25

Not the Rochdale canal, as is usually depicted on here — today it is the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, which follows its previous appearance (22/3/2015) with a shot that may be equally pleasing to traditionalists. In the depths of August, a small boy (well, OK, about 12-13) casts his line for sport. Get it while it lasts, kid, in a couple of weeks you’ll be back at school. Then again, so will I. (Actually the HNC has been on three times now: the other was 21/9/19.)

Sunday football, Peel Park

Sunday 17th August 2025, 12.10pm (day 5,106)

Peel Park football, 17/8/25

With little better that was worth doing this morning I wandered over to Bradford where the local Sunday leagues were running their first round of fixtures for the season. Three games were taking place simultaneously on Peel Park and this shot is taken from a point kind of in the middle of each of them, but with this pitch slightly elevated, hence the low viewpoint. This was one of those pictures which is being used here because it was what was intended when the shutter was pressed: always a good thing.

Redcar Beach

Saturday 16th August 2025, 4.00pm (day 5,105)

Redcar beach, 16/8/25

Only in Britain do we really try to create seaside resorts on north-facing coasts at latitudes like 56º above the equator: but Redcar, near Middlesbrough, just about gets away with it thanks to having a really excellent beach that stretches for miles. Even when the sun is out, though, you still need to be quite hardy to make a day of it, but obviously this family have the necessary genetic qualities.
