Chinatown arch, Manchester

Monday 21st October 2013, 11.00am (day 788)

Chinatown arch, 21/10/13

Manchester’s Chinatown district is the third biggest in Europe, apparently. This arch, completed in 1987, crosses Faulkner Street (in the middle of which I was stood while taking this) at its junction with Nicholas Street. A wet day today, unpleasant weather.

Nutclough, dusk

Sunday 20th October 2013, 6.20pm (day 787)

Nutclough, dusk, 20/10/13

The night falls earlier and earlier — but of course that is the time of year. The real shock to the system will come a week from today, when the clocks go back.

Unicyclists, Dock Lane, Leeds

Saturday 19th October 2013, 3.05pm (day 786)

Unicyclists, 19/10/13

I didn’t even realise these guys were on unicycles when I took this shot, otherwise I would have waited for them to come closer. I think it works anyway, just a shame the detail is lost.

Joe undergoes Borgification

Friday 18th October 2013, 3.50pm (day 785)

Borgification, 18/10/13

As anticipated in Star Trek: The Next Generation. Or possibly, just a visit to the local optician.

Grand Central pub, Oxford Road, Manchester

Thursday 17th October 2013, 9.50am (day 784)

Grand central, 17/10/13

Taken firstly because I liked the light (it’s been a damn good month for it) and secondly for the novelty factor of actually being able to see across Oxford Road without a bus being in the way. The tower block in the background has appeared on the blog before, by the way.

Decanting

Wednesday 16th October 2013, 8.20am (day 783)

Decanting, 16/10/13

Made no greater excursion into the outside world than yesterday, and the weather was worse too, with this being perhaps the darkest and gloomiest day I’ve experienced since January. Racking off the blackberry wine was about the most interesting thing that was seen in the day. Ahhh, alcohol. It’s all just the excretions of yeast, you know. Fungus poo, in other words.

View from my house

Tuesday 15th October 2013, 5.50pm (day 782)

House view, sunset, 15/10/13

I worked at home and taught online today and never left the house. Fortunately for the blog in these circumstances, there’s always the view.

Among other things you get a good impression of the rising extension to the Nutclough Mill (see also here and here). Will it look OK when finished, or terrible? Well, doubtless you will find out, as will we.

Piccadilly Gardens, Manchester

Monday 14th October 2013, 11.40am (day 781)

Piccadilly Gardens, 14/10/13

My perambulations through the centre of Manchester do seem to get later and later, don’t they. If the city has a symbolic centre, Piccadilly Gardens is probably it — no, not Old Trafford (which isn’t actually in Manchester anyway). This shot makes it look vaguely pastoral, which is why I like it: actually the place is a concrete jungle. A pretty intense rain shower stopped a couple of minutes beforehand.

Side of the Hebden Water

Sunday 13th October 2013, 10.00am (day 780)

Hebden water, 13/10/13

A cute little corner of HB, particularly with all those berries out, but also a familiar one: I see this place on many days. In a way this is a stock shot I have been reserving for just such a day as today — spent mostly working at home and not feeling very inspired (for photography, or for work now I come to think about it). It becomes the day’s photo almost by default.

Drizzly day

Saturday 12th October 2013, 11.55am (day 779)

Drizzly day, 12/10/13

It’s been a good few days for photography but not much was happening today either with the light or with life. Drizzle and chill has probably announced the start of proper autumn weather.
