Keith and Dave, Solstice dinner

Friday 21st December 2012, 7.00pm (day 484)

Keith and Dave, 21/12/12

Here we are on an exact anniversary of last year’s equivalent dinner (same house, same seats); but none the worse for that, I have been looking forward to the evening for some time. Dave (who seems fascinated by whatever it is that Keith is evoking here) was last seen on the blog in July, stuffing a lit torch down his throat – and Keith has also appeared before. A happy Winter Solstice to them, and to all the rest of you too.

Thursday market, Hebden Bridge

Thursday 20th December 2012, 9.00am (day 483)

Fish van, 20/12/12

A regular Thursday scene in Hebden Bridge, but not previously depicted on the blog. The fish van is a welcome visitor – he’s having a quiet day here, there is usually a considerable queue. Mind you, it was chucking it down with rain this morning.

Industrial building, Hebden Bridge

Wednesday 19th December 2012, 5.05pm (day 482)

Factory roof, 19/12/12

We are at the low time of the year: no light, and I’m largely working at home, recovering as best I can from the exertions of the last semester but not yet ready to call it Christmas. Not much to take pictures of then: except dimly-lit attempts to capture the atmosphere of my home town in one of my rare ventures outside.

School Christmas play

Tuesday 18th December 2012, 5.55pm (day 481)

School Xmas play, 18/12/12

Another recurring event, as I am sure it is for most parents – last year it happened on December 13th. Very hard to get a shot that was a) sharp enough and b) didn’t disturb some arbitrary child protection law – but here’s my best attempt.

Still dark at Victoria Station

Monday 17th December 2012, 7.45am (day 480)

Still dark, 17/12/12

Bloody hell, roll on the solstice – all the way into Manchester on the early morning cattle truck and it doesn’t even have the decency to be starting to get light by the time I arrive. Today was probably my most daylight-free day of the winter so far. The one consolation – I will have no more Monday mornings like this for months now.

Joe in Caroline’s kitchen

Sunday 16th December 2012, 10.30am (day 479)

Joe in Caroline's kitchen, 16/12/12

After yesterday’s night out we stayed over in Leeds at our friend, Caroline’s. As was revealed, her kitchen catches some great morning light. This is about as natural a shot of Joe as it is possible to get at the moment – note the rock ‘n’ roll hairstyle…

The backstage door

Saturday 15th December 2012, 7.45pm (day 478)

Before the show, 15/12/12

A Saturday night out is about to start, not just for me but for many people. I’m very happy with this shot, an occasion where it all (composition, lighting, mood) turned out exactly as I hoped it would when I took it.

Back in the Railway

Friday 14th December 2012, 5.10pm (day 477)

Back in the Railway, 14/12/12

Things in Hebden Bridge are largely all recovered now after the floods of June and July; most establishments are back open again. This includes the Railway, my local pub, last seen on the blog on 22nd July when we got together there to have what might have been a final drink-up and tried to coordinate our plans to keep it open. Well, for now, it is still open, in independent ownership and not quite the same as it was, but near enough. Happy Fridays.

My office (for the first time)

Thursday 13th December 2012, 8.55am (day 476)

My office, 13/12/12

476 days into doing this blog and this is the first time my campus office has appeared on it. It’s not a very inspiring place, at least, not photographically, and it faces north so it never gets any decent light. At least, so I thought – until this morning, when some strange coincidence of angle and reflection bathed it for about sixty seconds in golden sunlight. It was nice while it lasted – and means it can finally make it onto the blog. I confidently predict you’ll be seeing no more of it for the foreseeable future.

Tree and steam

Wednesday 12th December 2012, 12.05pm (day 475)

Steam tree, 12/12/12

It was the MA: DTCE graduation today but although it was a nice event, this was the best photo of the day, the 12th hour of the 12th day of the 12th month of the 12th year, marked by this tree getting a steam bath from a nearby vent.
