Walker on Hindscarth

Friday 13th April 2012, 1.15pm (day 232)

Walker on Hindscarth, 13/4/12

Taken on the 54th walk of my project to climb all the mountains in the English Lake District. Is it any wonder that it was this which got me fully into photography in the first place. It’s a subject that just gives & gives.

Incidentally, the snow-covered peak second right is Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England. The dome to far right is Great Gable. Between where the walker (and photographer) stand and the slope behind is a steep valley holding the motor road of Honister Pass.

Couple in pub

Thursday 12th April 2012, 5.40pm (day 231)

Couple in pub, 12/4/12

This is obviously the place to sit in the evening at the present time – the light is hitting just right for portrait work (see the photo of Mick presented as an alternative option a couple of days ago). I don’t know this couple, but they look real good on this pic. I did show them it after it was taken, and she loved it, he hated that he had been snapped. What that says about them I don’t know. I did tell them I wouldn’t put it on Facebook. Which was a half-truth.

Urbis, Manchester

Wednesday 11th April 2012, 6.10pm (day 230)

Outside Urbis, 11/4/12

Am still off work so was going into Manchester tonight, for an evening out, as opposed to passing this place on the way in to work in the morning. It’s actually not ‘Urbis’ any more – a failed museum of ‘city life’ it is apparently being converted into the new National Football Museum, though there’s little actual sign of that happening right now. Took me a couple of minutes to get this exact photo as lots of other people were walking past, I kept hoping that a) the light would stay b) the girls wouldn’t just get up and leave and c) no one would arrest me for pointing a camera at them for ages.

At Todmorden station

Tuesday 10th April 2012, 11.45am (day 229)

Tod station, 10/4/12

This photo encapsulates the weather we had today: wind, rain and sun. Taken from inside the (heated) waiting room on platform 2 of Todmorden railway station.

Another very strong candidate for photo of the day is on my Facebook page, by the way. Doubtless it will make its way into the next ‘best of the rest’ collection.

My Lake District pinboard

Monday 9th April 2012, 12.50pm (day 228)

Lakes pinboard, 9/4/12

Day spent mainly re-stocking shelves in the newly decorated bedroom, so not much to document. The pinboard which helps me keep track of the Lake District fells I still have to climb has not yet found a place in the new room, but that at least enabled me to see it from a different angle today. What you see here is a slice through the southern part of the district. Red pins are those fells in the 214 which I haven’t climbed yet. (I could tell you what the other colours mean, but then I’d have to kill you.) I’m getting itchy to go again but the weather’s terrible at the moment.

Putting up the shelves

Sunday 8th April 2012, 11.35am (day 227)

Putting up shelves, 8/4/12

Since Thursday we’ve been redecorating our bedroom but it’s not a particularly exciting series of events. Still, it deserves to get on this blog at some point, as the site is intended to reflect the full range of my life’s activities. Except on this day, we got the experts in to help – i.e., my Dad. I don’t trust my shelving skills. Thus, this is my father’s first appearance on this blog – and thanks to him today for his sterling work.

Happy Easter

Saturday 7th April 2012, 10.45am (day 226)

Easter egg, 7/4/12

Historically, as eggs were not supposed to be eaten during Lent, but you can’t persuade chickens to stop laying them for the duration, there would always have been a surplus of them at Easter. Hence, the practical usefulness of the tradition of the Easter egg. Apparently.

This display currently decorates the window of the Yorkshire Soap Co. in Hebden Bridge. Incidentally I like the very mild risque touch in this picture of confectionery, thanks to an unanticipated reflection.

Joe at Turf Moor (Burnley FC)

Friday 6th April 2012, 2.45pm (day 225)

Joe at Burnley, 6/4/12

Good Friday, and the 7th football match to feature on this blog since I began on 26/8/11. And of all the 7, this one was the worst. From Joe’s mood here you can tell the match hasn’t kicked off yet. (Result: Burnley 1, Brighton 0. Even completists might be bored by the information that the other six matches on here have ended Morecambe 2-3 Bristol Rovers, Brighton 2-0 Barnsley, Morecambe 1-2 Accrington Stanley, Leeds 1-2 Brighton [Yes!!], Liverpool 6-1 Brighton [er… not so good], Brighton 2-0 Portsmouth.)

Tara

Thursday 5th April 2012, 5.40pm (day 224)

Tara, 5/4/12

Tara is the dog of our friend Steve Grey who drinks in the local pub. Of all the people I have ever met Steve is the one who is closest to having a ‘daemon’ like the ones possessed by all the characters in Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials novels – a companion soul who takes the form of an animal. Tara is Steve’s. They are almost impossible to imagine without one another.

Hoge Brug, Maastricht

Wednesday 4th April 2012, 10.10am

Hoge brug, 4/4/12

Most of the Netherlands didn’t even exist until the 12th century, and Maastricht (from the Roman Mosae Trajectum) is the only genuinely venerable city in the country, having grown around crossing points over the river Maas (or Meuse). And here is the newest, the Hoge Brug or ‘High Bridge’. As you can see, it was something of a grey and dull morning, though not as bad as at home, where the early summer of two weeks ago has reverted to snow. Glad I’m away for a little while.
