In the Piece Hall

Thursday 24th March 2022, 1.30pm (day 3,864)

Piece Hall sculpture, 24/3/22

Since Halifax’s Piece Hall was renovated a few years ago it has become by far the most pleasing urban space in the town. The quadrangle is currently displaying a number of sculptures by Sophie Ryder, this being one of them; I recall a similar huge grey rabbit/woman at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park around a year ago, making me think, with hindsight, that this is probably the same artist. Incidentally, as far as I can ascertain, no actual rabbits have appeared on this blog in its 3,864 days.

The immediate vicinity

Tuesday 22nd March 2022, 11.40am (day 3,862)

Outside house, 22/3/22

After 11 days of 11 different places I had no need to, nor intention to, leave the house today. What you see here is what was outside our front door, with the little dollop of variety and ‘free stuff’ to sustain the interest — at least a little.

The Mytholmroyd salt mines

Monday 14th March 2022, 3.25pm (day 3,854)

Salt mines, 14/3/22

Salt stores were once kept in order to preserve food: a matter of life and death, hundreds of years ago. Nowadays we use them to grit the roads — and not even that much, in this relatively mild winter. But I guess this monumental pile of sodium chloride will last until next year, if needed then.

The Victoria bee

Wednesday 9th March 2022, 7.55am (day 3,849)

The Victoria bee, 9/3/22

Third shot in a row taken in Manchester, and that’s the first time that has happened since early February 2020. I’m pulling an early one, too. Manchester, in need of some kind of symbol (as everything has to have a ‘brand’ these days), has adopted the bee, and statues like this in a variety of colours crop up at points in the city.

Vote Candy

Friday 4th March 2022, 10:45am (day 3,844)

Vote Candy, 4/3/22

It’s voting season for the Students’ Union. I’m certainly endorsing Candy’s candidacy. With a name like Candy Kong how, indeed, can one go wrong. She should be given a position of power with immediate effect.

Car park, West Leeds

Wednesday 2nd March 2022, 7.25pm (day 3,842)

Farsley car park, 2/3/22

Another damp day. With only occasional breaks, it feels like it’s been raining for weeks. A misty car park somewhere in the western reaches of Leeds. In the distance another soul who, like me, is just glad to find a game on. This shot is a relative rarity for me, as it’s one where I don’t mind the cars.

Caught in the hail storm

Thursday 24th February 2022, 1.40pm (day 3,836)

Hail storm, 24/2/22

Working at home today, I thought, after lunch, I would just go out and stretch my legs for a bit. Great timing; this was taken only a few minutes later. On the other hand, this was actually the most interesting thing to happen today.

The water race, full

Sunday 20th February 2022, 2.00pm (day 3,832)

And still it rains, seemingly without end. The water race at the end of the old millpond in the woods is only rarely filled, and when it is it’s a sign we are once again in the ‘cross fingers and hope’ approach to flood defence. But the town stayed above water — today at least.

A need for umbrellas

Wednesday 16th February 2022, 3.10pm (day 3,828)

Grim day, 16/2/22

Umbra in Latin means ‘shade’, a sign that the umbrella was originally designed to protect against the sun. But this was not the application required in Hebden Bridge this afternoon. I believe this outrage against good weather can officially be termed ‘Storm Dudley’.

Chinatown

Wednesday 9th February 2022, 2.50pm (day 3,821)

Chinatown, 9/2/22

I haven’t had three days in a row of Manchester pictures since February 2020 — what happened after that, I wonder. But today’s the latest burst of two-in-a-row, and with good light to boot. Manchester’s Chinatown is, in no way comparable to, say, San Francisco’s in scale (not to mention anywhere in China) but in European terms it’s sizeable enough. At this point it is possible to imagine one is far away.
