Gnomon

Friday 4th September 2020, 4.50pm (day 3,298)

Gnomon, 4/9/20

Gnomon is one of those wonderful strange words use to name mundane things. In this case, the bit of a sundial that casts the shadow.  This particular gnomon sits in the middle of St. George’s Square in Hebden Bridge, and was putting in a brief stint of duty as I took this shot — although this was about the only moment of sunshine in the afternoon. The shop behind — the full name of which you can probably work out — will be either a boutique or a café, as those are the only shops the town really has, these days.

Birthday sign

Wednesday 26th August 2020, 7.15pm (day 3,289)

Chimney sunset, 26/8/20

“But how shall I know the day of my birth in future years, O Holy Seer of Signs?”

“Drew, stand beside the river and look for the day on which the sun sets between the two pillars. Thus shall you know it.”

I’m 51 today.  This is now the tenth year of the blog.  And life goes on, one day at a time.

Pavement café culture (Yorkshire style)

Sunday 23rd August 2020, 4.15pm (day 3,286)

Pavement café, 23/8/20
I have been thinking about this, and have decided to declare this the one and only positive outcome of lockdown –‘this’ being the emergence of a UK pavement café culture.  We don’t necessarily have the weather for it, but hey, pubs and restaurants can invest in some umbrellas, as they do elsewhere. On sunny afternoons like this one, it doesn’t matter, and we can give it a shot.

Beer garden, the White Swan

Wednesday 5th August 2020, 4.35pm (day 3,268)

White Swan shelter, 5/8/20

An innovative approach to keeping oneself, one’s beer and one’s smoking materials free from moisture. The weather could not decide what to do this afternoon.

In St. George’s Square

Monday 3rd August 2020, 3.45pm (day 3,266)

Reflections in square, 3/8/20

The square reflected in the roundel, these posts standing outside the Shoulder of Mutton pub, happily reopened, after not just the c*r***v**** crap but the floods of Feb 9th as well. You see, we need economic activity here.  Which is why this new ‘local lockdown’ has had no discernible effect at all.

This is a kind-of self-portrait: look closely enough into the mirror and I’m there in the background.

Under surveillance

Sunday 2nd August 2020, 1.10pm (day 3,265)

Masked Lego figure, 2/8/20

It is five years to the day since I took probably my favourite picture of this blog, and certainly the one I worked hardest to get — the one of the summit of Kilimanjaro.  In 2020, such expeditions have become pipe dreams, although being fair about it, there have just been nine pictures in a row that were not taken on home turf.  But I am back here in Hebden Bridge for a few days at least, and there’s work to get back to.  Here, there at least remain toyshop owners with a sense of wry humour.

Odd jobs around the house

Thursday 23rd July 2020, 1.30pm (day 3,255)

On Unity Street, 23/7/20

I too was having a day doing things around the house, but definitely do not share this guy’s head for heights.

Mysterious writings

Wednesday 8th July 2020, 9.40am (day 3,240)

Mysterious writings, 8/7/20

The message on the one side is clear enough — but the bin? More proof that others are starting to lose it thanks to lockdown? Or perhaps they have always been the same.

Ex-scarecrow

Monday 6th July 2020, 3.25pm (day 3,238)

Ex-scarecrow, 6/7/20

The scarecrow itself is long gone. But its boots remain, like a sort of imprint, or memory. I doubt they’ll scare the birds off much. But then again, nor do scarecrows, particularly.

Smoke (something happening)

Friday 3rd July 2020, 11.50am (day 3,235)

Bonfire smoke, 3/7/20

Over the last 3,235 days of this attempt to document the rest of my life in pictures there have, of course, been plenty of days where I’ve just stayed at home and not really done much. But there hasn’t been such a concentrated run of such days, day after day after day where there is nothing happening outside. And on a day when it never stopped raining…. this swell of smoke, a bonfire presumably, really was about the most interesting thing seen all day (with apologies to the family).

By the end of this month we may have been able to visit a pub and go away for a few days. If you think either of these things is a bad thing… let’s just say I disagree with you.
