Maria-Carme in her office

Thursday 5th September 2013, 9.35am (day 742)

Maria's office, 5/9/13

Having graced it back on my last visit to Bergen in June, Maria-Carme becomes the latest in a run of people to make their second appearance on this blog. This is her in her office prior to our project meeting today. I like her impressive chair and the way her hand seems to have become a separate, spider-like entity.

The wedding photograph

Saturday 24th August 2013, 4.00pm (day 730)

Wedding photography, 24/8/13

Congratulations to Caroline — I’m sure you don’t need to ask which of these people she is — and Loyd, on the right, married today at St Mary’s church in Yarm, with this photo taken later at Priory Cottages, Wetherby, the venue for the reception. And a very good time was had by all.

A Sunny Friday Evening Outside the Railway

Friday 5th July 2013, 4.55pm (day 680)

The title of the post says it all. It’s sunny, warm, Friday evening… this is where your friends are… what would you do?

Tara, second appearance

Thursday 20th June 2013, 5.35pm (day 665)

Tara, 20/6/13

Nice to have a friend appear on the blog. Tara’s second appearance as it happens; the first being back in April 2012. This shot is taken in the same place, same company, as that one. Life goes on and many things are seen but sometimes you come back to the same places, the same companions.

Maria-Carme on the Nordnes peninsula

Friday 7th June 2013, 10.25pm (day 652)

Maria Carme, 7/6/13

Maria-Carme is my hostess/contact/employer/friend in Bergen and almost every trip I have made here during the course of this blog has been down to her, so it’s about time she made it onto the site. As you can see, she has a great look, and this photo also deserves to get on when you consider a) the time it was taken and b) the amount of daylight still in the sky. So much light here at this time of year, so much to see.

Uli in the forest, Waya Island

Friday 17th May 2013, 8.30am (day 631)

Uli in forest, 17/5/13

We went on a hike up Mount Nulakaokao (or something like that) today, 10 of us of various nationalities, led by our Fijian guide Ameo, who astonishingly, climbed up and over the volcanic rocks in bare feet. Impossible to cover the whole trek in one picture, but this one wins just for being rather different: it would have been easy to pick one of the views from and of the mountain itself, which were spectacular, but I like the flare effect on this one. This is Uli, from Dortmund, Germany.

Taija

Saturday 27th April 2013, 10.45am (day 611)

Taija, 27/4/13

Taija (pronounce it to more-or-less rhyme with ‘higher’) is from Oakland, California, and has been staying at the Kookaburra Inn these last few days. I took this while we hung out this morning, with her on her way to the airport and eventually somewhere else in this, the sixth-largest country in the world. Like a lot of people I have met on this trip, we were only acquainted a short time, but I think this shot captures her quite well – or more accurately, my image of her.

Network launch, QUT

Tuesday 19th March 2013, 3.55pm (day 572)

Christine, HERN launch, 19/3/13

Feel like I should feature on here some of the nice people at QUT (Queensland University of Technology) who have set up this academic visit of mine and are doing their best to make me feel at home. This is Christine, speaking at today’s launch of the HERN (Higher Education Research Network), in the atrium of one of their impressive new buildings (in fact, on the floor above the Digital Barrier Reef which featured back in early February). There are actually a couple of hundred people in this room at this point, but I like the sense of emptiness in the shot.

Incidentally, I think the following universities have featured on this blog at some point, in no particular order: Manchester, QUT, Charles Sturt, Helsinki, Otago, Alabama, Leeds, Birmingham City, Bergen, Bergen University College (these are two different institutions) and the Academy of National Economy in Moscow. The nicest campus? Er…. probably Alabama.

Neil Young

Sunday 10th March 2013, 9.05pm (day 563)

Even if he didn’t sing it at the Sydney Entertainment Center tonight – this man wrote Down By the River. For that reason alone, I’d have his babies.
