Clare’s luggage (and opportunities missed)

Friday 27th January 2012, 1.50pm (day 155)

Clare's luggage, 27/1/12

No offense, but I’ve never seen a man who can take this much away for a one-night journey, regardless of the circumstances. I quite like the mild optical illusion with this picture: the reason the rucksack to left appears to be balanced on its side, and the ID tag on the right is hovering in mid air, is because this pic is actually taken from above.

However, the moral of the day is – Always Take The Camera. In the evening, after I’d given up seeking a better shot in a grey and dreary, uneventful day, there was a half-hour snowstorm that left Hebden Bridge dusted with white in the evening light. But… you’ll just have to take my word for it. Two hours later it was all gone.

De Rokerij, Amstel

Wednesday 25th January 2012, 3.55pm (day 153)

de Rokerij, 25/1/12

In my life I have been to the Netherlands about 12 times: mostly in Amsterdam but I have also visited some provincial towns. And even though there will be many people who will look at certain surface features, particularly in Amsterdam, and think that this is sometimes a sleazy place, they have got it all wrong. In all those times I have been here, regardless of what state I have been in, I have never once felt threatened, and no one has ripped me off for even the slightest Euro. This is, in fact, the most civilised country in the whole world.

Window, Clare’s treatment room

Sunday 22nd January 2012, 2.20pm (day 150)

Treatment room, 22/1/12

I am trying hard not to repeat myself on this blog. That means that there are some photo possibilities which I’ve had my eye on for a while, but been saving, as they could then be used on one of those days on which I did not leave the immediate area, just sat and worked, and there were no particularly decent views outside.

Today was one of those days.

It was also the 150th day of the blog, which means I’ve updated the ‘Best of the Rest‘ page with some more shots that didn’t quite make it. Enjoy…

Stairwell, the Hotel Rica

Wednesday 18th January 2012, 6.30pm (day 146)

Stairwell, Hotel Rica, 18/1/12

Couldn’t decide whether to make some comments about the blandness of (most) hotels or just leave this shot alone. OK, OK, I’ll leave it alone.

Waiting for midnight

Saturday 31st December 2011, 11.45pm (day 128)

Feet, NYE, 31/12/11

The feet are those of a fellow guest at the New Year’s Eve party to which we (including Joe) were invited. It wasn’t the most exciting party in the world but it was nice to be out on Dec 31st for the first time in 9 years, since Joe was born.

So ends 2011, the last 128 days of which have been documented here. All in all, it was an interesting year… 2012 is gearing up for more of the same. And I kept my 2011 New Year’s resolution: to take my photography more seriously. This blog is one manifestation of that. Happy New Year to you all, may it be a safe and fulfilling one whatever it brings.

Breakfast on bed

Thursday 29th December 2011, 9.05am (day 126)

Breakfast on bed, 29/12/11

In the 126 days of this blog, few have been harder than today was when it came to finding inspiration. I worked at home all day, not leaving the house; the weather outside was flat grey skies and rain; I didn’t even have the other family members as subjects as both were out from early on and aren’t coming back until tomorrow.

But I have a duty to fulfil, so here is my best effort – given a little tweak by going black & white, which works on this shot, I think (and disguises how faded is the coloured fabric of the duvet cover). It also gives the eagle-eyed among you a chance to vet my sense of humour and football-related reading matter.

Joe & Tom playing table football

Friday 23rd December 2011, 2.25pm (day 120)

Table football, 23/12/11

The rain came down again. It won’t be a white Christmas this year, unlike the last two. When my sister & her family came round, indoor games were the order of the day. I like this shot for its signs of movement. Joe’s 4-1 up, but I don’t know what the final score was. His tactic is usually to twizz both spinners round at maximum velocity for the entire game. Sometimes it can be devastatingly effective.

Winter solstice celebration

Wednesday 21st December 2011, 7.20pm (day 118)

Solstice meal, 21/12/11

24 people from the neighbourhood gathered in the ex-pub over the road to eat good home-cooked food and drink wine. Call it a ‘Solstice celebration’ (for today was the shortest day of the year), or a pre-Christmas get-together; it doesn’t matter, the good food and the good emotions remain either way. This is Christmas, for me: forget the presents, the best thing about it is the excuse it offers to push the boat out a little further and indulge in some really excellent eating for a few days. Tonight’s meal was great, and I didn’t have to lift a finger.

At work in the kitchen

Tuesday 20th December 2011, 12.20pm (day 117)

Chopped beetroot, 20/12/11

A week off work, but I’m at home. When this happens I tend to cook. I like doing it and I like the results, which also tend to go down well with others. I don’t have to do Christmas dinner this year, so let’s get the time in now.

Martin Scorsese

Monday 19th December 2011, 1.25pm (day 116)

Taxi Driver, 19/12/11

That I was sat on my bed watching Taxi Driver at 1.30pm is sign enough. That I decided this picture best encapsulated the day says more still. Well, I’m on vacation. I had a huge supermarket run later and made a bloody good dinner, if it makes you feel any better.

Is Scorsese’s 5 minutes in this movie the best director’s cameo of all time, or what? “You see that woman at the window? That’s my wife. But that’s not my apartment…. You know who lives there….?”
