Working on the train to Glasgow

Thursday 10th March 2016, 5.05pm (day 1,659)

Train to Glasgow, 10/3/16

I’m examining a doctoral thesis in Glasgow tomorrow and it’s too far to do as a day trip so I came up tonight. This shot was snapped during a spell of good light on the train, somewhere around Carlisle. The Mac shows that I’m still just about working at this point but it wasn’t to last much longer — then again, you try assimilating Michel Foucault’s The Archaeology of Knowledge past 5pm on a Thursday. But then again I did have wine (as seen bottom left).

Ingredients: essence of trademark

Tuesday 1st March 2016, 8.40am (day 1,650)

Essence of trademark, 1/3/16

March began with foul, grey weather and I never left the house. This caught my eye in the morning; there are just so many things to admire…. The unexplained combinations, like “fruitliquid” and “waterjuice” (the latter with a trademark)… What is “yuzu”, whether frozen or not? And “pomelo essence”? What are EFAs? Why are these things necessary in life?

Seminar audience

Monday 29th February 2016, 12.55pm (day 1,649)

Seminar audience, 29/2/16

On the blog’s second-ever February 29th, things didn’t get much more exciting than on 29/2/12, as I pack ’em in for my 1:00 matinee show.

In the ‘Lord Rodney’, Keighley

Saturday 20th February 2016, 2.35pm (day 1,640)

Keighley pub, 20/2/16

There have been a run of eventful days in the last week and a half — today marks the 9th different location for a shot in 9 days. (To wit: Manchester, Portmeirion, Devil’s Bridge, Aberystwyth, Llangollen, Hebden Bridge, the Lake District, York and Keighley.) But whereas last Saturday saw us exploring the surreal delights of Portmeirion, today we went to Keighley to buy a mattress. And it was peeing down. Thrill a minute stuff…. But still, a decent weekend, as I hope these guys were having in their own ways.

The robot greenhouse

Monday 15th February 2016, 4.00pm (day 1,635)

Robot greenhouse, 15/2/16

The reason I am in Wales is to do a talk at the University of Aberystwyth, which I did tonight. Beforehand I had a tour of this facility. Aberystwyth is well out in the sticks — for its size (which is not large), the most isolated town in Britain — and thus has a focus on rural and agricultural research rather than, say, heavy engineering. But that doesn’t mean high technology is just something other people do. This is a near-fully automated robot greenhouse, full of computer imaging equipment and automated water dispensing pipes. And you thought growing your food was just a matter of getting the weather right…

Victoria, platform 4

Monday 1st February 2016, 12.05pm (day 1,621)

Platform 4, Victoria, 1/2/16

Manchester Victoria station is much improved by the recent renovations, but actually this picture is taken in the non-reconstructed part; squatting under the [insert name of current corporate sposnor] Arena, this was a rare burst of light. Nicely illuminated these guys waiting for the 12:whatever to Wigan, though. And was I arriving in the city late, or going home early? I’m not saying, Possibly both…

Pop-up shop, the sequel (3.5 years on)

Sunday 31st January 2016, 2.20pm (day 1,620)

Pop up organic shop, 31/1/16

On 1st August 2012, the photo of the day was one taken in the Hebden Bridge Baptist Chapel, where the Valley Organics shop had temporarily set up after the twin floods on 21st June and 9th July 2012. Exactly three and a half years later, here the same enterprise is again, grateful for the help of others — in this case the temporary premises are offered by the Salem Centre. I don’t want here to complain or get political — that is not the point of this shot. But I do recognise that all concrete help of this kind comes from within the community, directly.

A battered old favourite

Saturday 30th January 2016, 6.50pm (day 1,619)

Cuckoo's Nest, 30/1/16

Finally made it home, 24 hours behind schedule, and just before landing finished this for the umpteenth time. I know pretty much exactly when I bought this book — April 1989 at a gas station in Pennsylvania. As you can see, it’s certainly seen some attention since then. And rightly so; in my opinion it’s definitely one of the greatest novels ever written. If you’ve never read it, you really should.

Apollon, Bergen

Thursday 28th January 2016, 7.15pm (day 1,617)

Apollon, 28/1/16

It’s a bar. It’s also a record store. It’s…. it’s…. well, what more do you want? Or need??

In transit, Schiphol

Tuesday 26th January 2016, 1.05pm (day 1,615)

Schiphol, 26/1/16

So ends a 96-day run in the UK, a relatively long one for me: Tallinn in October was my last trip out. The weather was gross all day, so no in-flight panoramas I’m afraid. This shot epitomises the day more — like everyone else who flies around Europe on any kind of regular basis I am pretty familiar with Schiphol’s gigantic terminal. I quite like this shot because of the seeming dichotomy between the two sides of it; brutal vertical lines like that one in the middle don’t usually help the composition but here I think it works.
