Enter the gladiators

Saturday 10th October 2015, 3.00pm (day 1,507)

Halifax Town, 10/10/15

Joe and I made one of our occasional trips to the Shay today to see Halifax v. Woking. Had never previously seen Halifax lose a match in 12 games spread over the last 18 years or so, but today they lived up to their league position and were comprehensively stuffed 3-0. Hence, the title of this post is somewhat ironic. Perhaps they would have done better had the furry bloke at the back been on from the start.

Old BBC site, Manchester

Friday 9th October 2015, 9.40am (day 1,506)

Old BBC building, 9/10/15

Little seems to have happened to the site of the old BBC building since the structure was removed three years ago. My confident (but wholly ironic) prediction that it might get turned into eco-friendly affordable housing seems as far away as ever.

Under the Arndale Centre

Thursday 8th October 2015, 8.15am (day 1,505)

Arndale centre, 8/10/15

If this shot illustrates anything it at least proves that I do occasionally get my lazy butt into Manchester before 9am in the morning. And that at such times there, the light can be very good.

Preparing for the jewellery class

Wednesday 7th October 2015, 6.50pm (day 1,504)

Preparing jewellery, 7/10/15

The rules I set myself on this blog (which are available on the ‘About’ page) state that I do not pose or stage photos, nor do I light them beyond what illumination is available naturally. These are true, but tonight, while stopping off for a pint on the way home from work, this woman was working on setting up some jewellery-making class in the White Lion, and complaining that she didn’t have good enough light. I noticed that the spotlights above were adjustable so made the necessary changes to help her out — then asked if I could take her picture because the light had suddenly come so good. So I suppose this one is half-lit. But one can bend the rules occasionally to help others.

Beside the Mersey

Tuesday 6th October 2015, 1.30pm (day 1,503)

Beside the Mersey, 6/10/15

When in Liverpool, go see the Mersey. Although in the end that’s just marketing of a sort. After all, no one has a sudden urge to go see the Mersey when they visit, say, Stockport (another town that this river runs through).

Grim morning

Monday 5th October 2015, 8.55am (day 1,502)

Grim, 5/10/15

This photo may be dull and grey, but hey — that epitomises things, as this was as good as it got today. One of the rare ‘photowhacks’, the one and only picture taken on a given day.

Coverdale

Sunday 4th October 2015, 2.05pm (day 1,501)

Coverdale, 4/10/15

It is nearly 24 years since I turned up one evening in Yorkshire (10th October 1991) on the assumption it would be another temporary stay. I’m still there. There are reasons for this.

Water race, Nutclough Woods

Saturday 3rd October 2015, 2.25pm (day 1,500)

Water race, 3/10/15

Welcome to day 1,500 of the blog, One and a half thousand days turns out to be 4 years, 1 month and 8 days in old money. The path through Nutclough Woods was closed for ages as the flood defenses at the bottom were rebuilt (three years after they were needed); but it is now open again, so let’s use this milestone date to celebrate that fact. The weather has turned autumnal, but the trees remain in summer green for now.

New Market, revisited

Friday 2nd October 2015, 9.30am (day 1,499)

New Market, 2/10/15

This minor street in Manchester city centre was previously pictured, relatively intact, back in April 2014. Since then it, like most of the rest of the city centre, has been chewed up in a big way. This is a less tidy shot than its previous appearance, but that’s just the way things are in Manchester at the moment.

Fire escape, Høgskolen i Bergen

Thursday 1st October 2015, 10.15am (day 1,498)

Fire escape, 1/10/15

Popped over to Norway on my way home…. I like this shot because for perhaps the first time ever not only does a litter bin not spoil the shot, it is absolutely crucial to it.
