Jaco makes his point

Thursday 4th December 2025, 11.10am (day 5,215)

AI workshop, 4/12/25

And most of us were listening to it — honest. (To be fair to the guy on the left, he’s keeping an eye on the Zoom room.) Golly, three days in a row in Manchester: that’s an outbreak of keenness, particularly in a week when I didn’t have any lectures to deliver.

Awaiting the seminar

Wednesday 26th June 2024, 3.00pm (day 4,689)

Conference bric-a-brac, 26/6/24

Hauled myself over to campus, which has been a rare occurrence during this bout of study leave and, in some ways, today reminded me of why. But I guess it was not a complete waste of time. This shot of the preliminaries was perhaps the most interesting thing about the seminar I attended from 3pm, however. Things seem to be floating, and I like the blue.

Big point

Wednesday 2nd May 2018, 11.10am (day 2,442)

REF seminar, 2/5/18

Although the photos don’t reflect this I have spent all the working week in Manchester thus far. Today’s fun was one of those events which someone else decided was terribly important. No offence to John, this speaker, who did a good job (and here makes his BIG point) but the detached look on the faces of one or two of my colleagues probably reflected my own, all things considered.

The speaker makes a joke

Friday 13th April 2018, 10.25am (day 2,423)

Ljubljana seminar, 13/4/18

Some of the nice people who invited me to Ljubljana to do my thing. Whatever the speaker has said, Polona (on the right), Lyn, and the gentleman whose name I can’t remember, certainly think it was funny. So that’s it for my brief time in Slovenia — it looked very pretty, but becomes just another place that I wish I’d had more time to spend in.

Seminar at UCL (with big dice)

Thursday 9th June 2016, 2.00pm (day 1,750)

Seminar, UCL, 9/6/16

Seeing as these are places I hang out in professionally it is unsurprising that a lot of university campuses have made it onto the blog in some form or another: over 20 by now. Here’s another one, University College London, to where I travelled today to attend this seminar on digital literacy. With big dice, used for an audience participation game of snakes and ladders, if you really want to know.

It’s day 1,750 of the blog, three-quarters of the way to my second thousand pictures. If I keep going — and I may as well — I’ll hit that milestone on 14th February 2017.

Seminar audience

Monday 29th February 2016, 12.55pm (day 1,649)

Seminar audience, 29/2/16

On the blog’s second-ever February 29th, things didn’t get much more exciting than on 29/2/12, as I pack ’em in for my 1:00 matinee show.

Sat at the back

Friday 29th May 2015, 9.55am (day 1,373)

Sat at the back, 29/5/15

We are all paying attention, honest. Not an exciting photo (with due respect to the people in it) but I should somehow depict the conference which actually got me to Paris. Last day here, a mixed break, to put it mildly, but life goes on. It’s certainly a fine city, undeniably a world centre.

Solveig has a think

Thursday 19th March 2015, 2.45pm (day 1,302)

Solveig thinks, 19/3/15

The reason I was at the airport yesterday was that I was once again travelling to Norway, I make this my 21st trip there since I first came in September 2010. The occasion was the final seminar and workshop for the project I’ve been working on since summer 2013, a nice but also poignant moment because right now I don’t know for sure that I’ll be back. In this picture participant (and friend) Solveig thinks about her next move. She’s the one always trying to talk to me in Norwegian, she’s very patient, which probably comes of originally being from Tromsø in northern Norway, which gets no sun for two months each winter.

Waiting to talk to people

Wednesday 4th June 2014, 12.35pm (day 1,014)

Seminar, 4/6/14

Not every photo that makes it up here is picked for artistic reasons (some would say that few of them are). The point of the choices is also to try to epitomise a day somehow. And I spent most of today in rooms, talking to people, while cruddy drizzle came down outside.

Before my seminar at CSU

Wednesday 6th March 2013, 12 noon (day 559)

CSU seminar, 6/3/13

These are the nice people at Charles Sturt University (Information and Library Science department) who have been looking after me the last few days and were nice enough to turn up today – along with a bunch of other online participants – to hear me talk about my work. I like this shot because of little details, like the disembodied legs and the distant perspective down the corridor to the right. Anyway – last day in Wagga today for now, though I may be back in May. Sydney tomorrow.
