Early morning, Platform 1

Thursday 13th September 2012, 7.05am (day 385)

Station sunrise, 13/9/12

Fourth and final day of the ALT-C conference, but the picture is not of Manchester today: this is Hebden Bridge station, as you probably recognise by now. An early morning after a late return the night before. Ow.

Dinner at the ALT-C conference

Wednesday 12th September 2012, 8.05pm (day 384)

Conference dinner, 12/9/12

Taken at the Palace Hotel, Manchester (with a fast shutter speed – it wasn’t actually that dark). Three Manchester photos in a row – that hasn’t happened before on the blog. It’s because I’m here for the ALT (Association of Learning Technologists) conference, although I don’t always like coming to conferences here – it’s hard to detach from other work. Nice meal tonight, though.

The old BBC building, later

Tuesday 11th September 2012, 4.05pm (day 383)

BBC demolition, 11/9/12

Told you not long ago that this place was all coming down. I like the combination of light and dust cloud on this shot.

Fire alarm at work

Monday 10th September 2012, 12.25pm (day 381)

Fire alarm, 10/9/12

An unexciting subject for a photo but this was an unexciting day. It does at least mark the first appearance of the exterior of the Ellen Wilkinson Building at university, in which I (occasionally) work. Named for the UK’s first female Minister of Education, by the way. But not a building of great architectural merit, inside or out.

Joe, guitar practise

Sunday 9th September 2012, 3.50pm (day 381)

Joe guitar, 9/9/12

Joe has appeared on this blog more than anyone, but then again, my genetic heritage is invested in him, so I guess that’s understandable. If we can persuade him to practice enough, he might even open for Iron Maiden one of these days. Although they’re probably all dead by now.

Nutclough woods

Saturday 8th September 2012, 3.15pm (day 380)

Nutclough woods, 8/9/12

A thoroughly glorious day, and a weekend too. The whole town was out enjoying it today. Plenty of other candidate photos today but this one serves to encapsulate the atmosphere. Do we forgive it the summer just gone, the ‘wettest for 100 years’ apparently? Well… let’s not go that far yet. If it stays sunny until mid-October, say, we might do.

‘Student Castle’, Oxford Road

Friday 7th September 2012, 7.55am (day 379)

Student Castle, 7/9/12

This building has been erected since I started this blog – it wasn’t there a year ago. It stands near Oxford Road station in Manchester. I am particularly impressed with the budget accommodation visible here, but I doubt it’s very suitable for anyone worried about heights.

Honeysuckle

Thursday 6th September 2012, 8.40am (day 378)

Honeysuckle, 6/9/12

Since Sunday I have spent the great majority of my time sat on my butt, working. It needs doing, but it doesn’t make for many photography opportunities. What you’ve been seeing here are just snatches of time, unrepresentative of life, really.

Today I was working at home all day and yet, still, there are these little bits and pieces of things to see, moments where the familiar territory of my house of 11 years shows me something new or different. This strand of honeysuckle reached down from the front wall and into the well below the kitchen window by our shed (where the cave spider lives), giving some colour to a grey and autumnal morning.

Moonset, over the valley

Wednesday 5th September 2012, 10.50am (day 377)

Setting moon, 5/9/12

Found out today that my new camera not only has a 20x telephoto lens on it but also a digital zoom that goes up to 70x. This is just me playing around with it, but I at least feel proud of the timing. Also, this one shows that today, wonder of wonders, was a nice, warm, sunny day with blue skies – perhaps the best one we’ve had since the end of May.

Baby Iris

Tuesday 4th September 2012, 1.35pm (day 376)

Baby Iris, 4/9/12

Awwww. Snapped today during a working lunch in the Students’ Union in Manchester. As well as her super-cuteness I like the symmetry of the various hands and limbs of both mother and baby but also the asymmetry of the other face in the background. Iris (5 months) thus becomes the youngest person to feature on this blog.
