Carlton Street

Friday 12th May 2017, 6.35pm (day 2,087)

Carlton Street, 12/5/17

Carlton Street in Hebden Bridge, named for Carlton Chambers, the building with the clock tower, and distinguished by the walkway connecting it with the premises over the road, long unused except as a vantage point for pigeons to dump on the heads of pedestrians below.

Breakfast bounty

Thursday 11th May 2017, 9.25am (day 2,086)

Crows feeding, 11/5/17

This old guy walks down our street at pretty much the same time every day and I know is the one who leaves these crusts out on the wall for the birds every day. And most days the bounty is accepted (see this shot for example). Maybe the crows, rooks, jackdaws, whatever they are, see him as some kind of divine benefactor.

Skip in alley, Chinatown

Wednesday 10th May 2017, 3.20pm (day 2,085)

Chinatown alley, 10/5/17

Normally, litter bins of various kinds are the bane of photographic composition (along with cars, telegraph wires and lamp-posts). But just occasionally one flowers into attractiveness, as here, I hope. Another beautiful spring day with excellent light, I hope this lasts a while.

On the 6:59

Tuesday 9th May 2017, 7.00am (day 2,084)

On the 6:59, 9/5/17

Ah, the joys of the 06:59 Hebden Bridge to Manchester Victoria service…. its cruddy carriages, standing room only by Todmorden, and then there’s that ‘6’ at the start of the time, which firmly puts it in the realm of ‘too early’. I dislike it, as you’ve probably gathered. Then again I doubt anyone has reached retirement age and fondly reminisced about the good old days on the 06:59.

Humph the Heron (maybe)

Monday 8th May 2017, 7.50am (day 2,083)

Humph the heron, 8/5/17

Impossible to be sure whether this is the same heron that has (possibly) had a few appearances on this blog over the last 18 months — including this one for instance. Comparing the photos I think this one may be a different, and younger, one. To me it looks a bit like a very thin person who has just been reluctantly dipped in a swimming pool and is now standing by the side of the water, shivering, knock-kneed and wrapped in a grey bathrobe. But it was a sunny spot to dry out this morning, either way,

Pitch invasion

Sunday 7th May 2017, 5.55pm (day 2,082)

Pitch invasion, 7/5/17

A benign one I can assure you. FC Halifax Town fans express their feelings about the scoring of the winning penalty in the shoot out in the (take a deep breath) National League North Play-off Semi-Final 2nd leg at home to Salford City (whose players really should practice penalties more). Second trip to the Shay stadium this season, after New Year’s Day, and there’ll probably be another one next Saturday seeing as we might as well go to the play-off final now they’ve made it.

Preparing pepper soup

Saturday 6th May 2017, 2.00pm (day 2,081)

Preparing peppers, 6/5/17

There’s a very well known photograph of a pepper by Edward Weston — here it is — but he was a guy who had the time and commitment to spend days photographing this one thing and invest it with mystical qualities. I was just making soup. This is why I’ll never be a pro photographer. But I still like peppers as objects, the way they’re not as soft as they initially look they might be (like tomatoes) and inside they have these weird landscapes of seed and flesh. And the soup was nice too.

Chapel Walks, Manchester

Friday 5th May 2017, 9.10am (day 2,080)

Chapel Walks, 5/5/17

The new tram lines are in place in Manchester, just behind the point from where this shot was taken: but building work is alive and well in the city centre. At some undefined point in the future — 2021, say — it might be possible to walk through the city without encountering some major construction project or other, but I have my doubts.

Careers event

Thursday 4th May 2017, 5.50pm (day 2,079)

Careers event, 4/5/17

It’s getting toward the end of the academic year, and our students would like to get jobs of some kind (I presume) so we ran a ‘careers event’ this evening featuring students old and new. Annalisa, on the left, graduated from the degree a decade ago now: Irene, on the right, last year. Kenji behind seems excited about something. Good luck to them all in their various futures.

Wednesday 3rd May 2017, 8.40am (day 2,078)

Market Street, 3/5/17

Another nice morning and a sunny day followed. Off we all go to work in our various ways — or possibly, come home again.
