Trying to work

Monday 23rd June 2025, 11.50am (day 5,051)

Work things, 23/6/25

I seem unable to get outside much at the moment — this is the fifth interior in a row and the 11th in the last 13 days. But I do have some work to do. For now, at least. Note: Drew is not a student midwife. The journey that mug has made in order to now reside at our place has been a saga in itself, in fact.

The wife makes notes

Thursday 13th February 2025, 4.35pm (day 4,921)

Clare takes notes, 13/2/25

At least by recent standards, this has been (and will remain) a very uneventful week. But one can still take notes about it. Clare, indeed, can take notes about almost anything, a phenomenon I have been observing for more than a quarter of a century now. Note both the writing and the pointing hand: the information is being processed even at the moment of its creation…

Awaiting the seminar

Wednesday 26th June 2024, 3.00pm (day 4,689)

Conference bric-a-brac, 26/6/24

Hauled myself over to campus, which has been a rare occurrence during this bout of study leave and, in some ways, today reminded me of why. But I guess it was not a complete waste of time. This shot of the preliminaries was perhaps the most interesting thing about the seminar I attended from 3pm, however. Things seem to be floating, and I like the blue.

Reading, with pen

Thursday 4th April 2024, 3.15pm (day 4,606)

Reading with pen, 4/4/24

My job title is Reader, and I agree with a senior Professor of my acquaintance who, a while back in my ‘annual review’, said — “You’re a Reader, do some fucking reading”. Yes, I do write in my books: call it ‘annotation’ and you can get away with it. Yes, this book does start with a discussion of Star Trek. But it’s all work, I promise.

Boring, but with effects

Tuesday 30th May 2023, 10.45am (day 4,296)

Office with star effect, 30/5/23

Having walked around eighteen miles yesterday, I did not leave the house today and got on with necessary work, stuff like online teaching (two of those), marking (lots), etc. Exciting it was not. Playing with some effects on my relatively new camera was as much as I managed. This is a truly naff image, I accept that, but so went the day.

95% recycled?

Monday 13th June 2022, 12.20pm (day 3,945)

95% recycled, 13/6/22

After the expanded horizons of yesterday, it was back to work today. I could have posted a pic demonstrating that I am a Pinball Wizard (all-time high score on the pub machine) but that would just have been me showing off, so let’s try to make out that I was engaged in some gainful employment. Whether the message on the pen is a metaphor or not, that’s up to you to determine.

Data analysis

Monday 28th February 2022, 1.55pm (day 3,840)

Highlighter pens, 28/2/22

Data analysis done the retro way, on the train. Who needs expensive software packages when you have highlighter pens of differing colours. And months after the fact, too — these are interview transcripts from St Helena. But hey, I got to them in the end.

Running near empty

Monday 13th July 2020, 12.55pm (day 3,245)

Biro, 13/7/20

From Wednesday this week I am off work for the rest of the month.  But until that day is reached, I am like this pen.  Just about still functioning but there’s very little left in the tank.
