My son and my father

Friday 8th September 2017, 4.10pm (day 2,206)

Son and father, 8/9/17

Apart from the fact that Joe, when stood up, is now some six inches taller than his grandfather, I would suggest that this photo is a pretty decent summation of how both of these people look at this point in time. Which is why I like it.

Top entrance, Nutclough Mill

Thursday 7th September 2017, 12.20am (day 2,205)

Nutclough entrance, 7/9/17

Once again, not an exciting shot, but Thursday was not an exciting day. Indeed, so uneventful was it that this is in fact a mild curiosity, a shot taken just after midnight on what therefore still amounts to the day before. Still counts though, making this the second-earliest shot ever on the blog: only the one in Bergen on 27/9/14 (12.10am) beats it.

O’Hare airport

Thursday 31st August 2017, 1.25pm (day 2,198)

Burgers at O'Hare, 31/8/17

Began a long journey home at 10.30am in Indiana. This is the O’Hare stopover. Farewell to the USA, thanks to my colleagues at Purdue for organising it, and I hope to be back…

View from the ‘Saluki’

Sunday 20th August 2017, 10.15am (day 2,187)

Gilman, Illinois, 20/8/17

The ‘Saluki’ is the name Amtrak give to the 8.15am service that runs the length of the state of Illinois, from Chicago down to Carbondale in the south. I am reliably informed that this gas station sits in Gilman, Illinois, where for no particular reason — Amtrak trains often seem to stop for no particular reason — we halted for a moment or two on this Sunday morning.

Are there maybe too many wires in this shot? Are the perpendiculars not quite what they could be? Yes to both, but I still quite like this shot. Gives my day an ‘on the road’ feeling. Have you worked out why I’m in southern Illinois yet? Well, I’m sure you will do so tomorrow.

New Market, 2017

Monday 14th August 2017, 9.00am (day 2,181)

New Market, 2017, 14/8/17

Finally, a street in Manchester which seems to have rid itself of its building works. New Market has had its transformation sporadically documented on here: this was it before the building, this one during, and now above. Was it worth all the bother? The premises on the right have become a hotel in the mean time: but I wouldn’t say much else has happened.

View on leaving Cannon Street station

Monday 3rd July 2017, 8.40am (day 2,139)

Shard and Thames, 3/7/17

Last day of this seven-day road trip to both ends of the country. This view is seen by thousands of commuters daily just before they pull into Cannon Street station in London, or just after they leave it (which is what I did this morning). Tower Bridge is on the left, the Shard, now Britain’s tallest building, dominates the view. London is a fine city and I seem to be spending an increasing amount of time here, but I am glad I do not live here all the time.

Alleyway

Wednesday 17th May 2017, 9.35am (day 2,092)

Alleyway, 17/5/17

I do like a good alleyway. They are the capillaries of the road network, the little incipient runnels in the tops of hillsides that then broaden out into streams and rivers.

Clare in the White Lion

Sunday 30th April 2017, 5.35pm (day 2,075)

Clare, White Lion, 30/4/17

The wife…. and a small square thing in the wall. Looking good after a day working at the Hebden Bridge burlesque festival which is in town this weekend. Well, she’s looking good, not sure about the small square thing.

John, outside the Railway

Friday 31st March 2017, 5.50pm (day 2,045)

John, Railway, 31/3/17

As March becomes April and it turns into spring, it’s nice to be able to sit outside the Railway, in reasonable warmth and evening sunlight, for the first time in about a year and a half. John: meet the blog. Followers of the blog: meet John.

Heading home

Thursday 16th March 2017, 5.55pm (day 2,030)

Going home, 16/3/17

Long day for me today. In on the 7am train out of HB and back on the 17.45 from Manchester, on which this shot was taken. I felt like the woman in the middle.
