West Yorkshire’s biggest prong(s)

Thursday 27th January 2022, 1.30pm (day 3,808)

Emley Moor mast, 27/1/22

The Emley Moor TV transmitting station can be seen from almost everywhere in West Yorkshire, particularly anywhere even vaguely elevated: but then again, that’s the reason why it was built where it was. It’s still the tallest free-standing structure in Britain. Except that it has a companion at the moment; a temporary mast designed to take the load while repairs are conducted, apparently. Yes, I am frustrated by the electricity wires on this shot but this was another day with not much to see, so I’m taking what’s there.

The mast, in autumn

Wednesday 3rd November 2021, 12 noon (day 3,723)

Mobile mast, autumn, 3/11/21

Hebden Bridge in autumn plumage. A nice place to be. Cold at the moment, though, but the trees look good.

First light at the mobile mast

Thursday 17th January 2019, 8.35am (day 2,702)

Mobile mast, 17/1/19

As noted on Tuesday, this was another day spent entirely at home, but at least the sun was out. The mobile mast across the valley — which has probably featured on a dozen shots or more by now (e.g. this one) — and the trees around it catch the first rays of sunlight to make it over the valley walls. The bird is a little extra touch.

Wednesday 17th October 2018, 6.35pm (day 2,610)

Emley Moor mast, 17/10/18

The TV mast on Emley Moor, east of Huddersfield, is well-known to anyone who lives in Yorkshire. Built in 1971 (after the previous version fell down due to ice), at 1,084 feet, or 330.4m, it is still the tallest free-standing structure in the UK and the fourth-highest in Europe. Why did I find myself up close to it on this pleasant evening? Well, you know. I get about.

The bit of this photo that troubles me is in the bottom left — the lines being the guy ropes for the radio mast, almost as tall, which stands just nearby, and which I’m pretty sure is new. But I guess you can ignore them.

The mast

Wednesday 2nd December 2015, 8.30am (day 1,560)

Mast, 2/12/15

This shot is taken from my house. Followers of this blog will have seen this mast on various occasions before (like this shot, for example); it stands on the horizon as I look south over the town. I liked the way the sunlight was just catching it this morning, so tried a long zoom on it for the first time. Shortly after this the light deteriorated back into being yet another grey day spent working at home, so this became pic of the day by default, really. I know it’s a dull time at the moment, but hey, it is every year, frankly.

Phone mast, late afternoon

Wednesday 28th December 2011, 2.40pm (day 125)

Phone mast, Hebden Bridge, 28/12/11

Few chances to take a good photo today until the sun began to go down. When you live in a valley the sun drops earlier than elsewhere and today the mast that is otherwise a minor blemish on the view marked the point at which it dipped below the horizon. Stonehenge – mobile communications mast – same thing? (From our house on Dec 28th each year, at least.)
