Finished building project

Wednesday 21st August 2019, 12.10pm (day 2,918)

Royce building, 21/8/19

I have tried to cut out pictures of building sites in Manchester to avoid sheer overload, but hey, here’s a rarity — a recently finished building project. Until about 18 months ago the new Henry Royce Building was just a grassy patch, but now it is there in all its bland majesty. Although I don’t think it’s yet finished inside.

Two shots in a row from Manchester… a sign it will start to creep back into my life on a more regular basis as the new year approaches. I’m not really going anywhere for three months now.

Propped up

Tuesday 20th August 2019, 3.40pm (day 2,917)

Propped up, 20/8/19

I have run through various scenarios as to how this air conditioning unit ended up in this situation, and none of them are very plausible. Nor are explanations as to why it should remain like this and not just be removed. But mine not to reason why.

Hot day on campus

Thursday 25th July 2019, 3.30pm (day 2,891)

Hot campus, 25/7/19

Infrastructurally, politically, the country moves inexorably to a state of meltdown, but hey, let’s at least enjoy the sunshine while it lasts.

A lenient storm

Thursday 11th July 2019, 4.25pm (day 2,877)

Whitworth Street rain, 11/7/19

Back to work, back to Manchester. Walking home through the city under threatening clouds, strongly suspecting that at any time I was going to get drenched. Here, on Whitworth Street, the rain had begun to fall. But the storm was lenient; just this one shower, then it passed on, to go drench some other part of the world.

More soldiers from the hi-vis army

Tuesday 2nd July 2019, 10.40am (day 2,868)

MECD and hi-vis, 2/7/19

I had declared an unofficial moratorium on pictures of building sites in Manchester but I don’t mind this one. What it does not show is the huge scale of the Manchester Engineering Campus Development (MECD: eventually to be renamed after some corporate donor or other I’m sure). Since being depicted rising from the ground back in January 2018 it has taken on vast scale, like a modern cathedral. No wonder my employer is worried about its cash reserves.

Canal Street lock, Manchester

Monday 24th June 2019, 9.05am (day 2,860)

Canal Street lock, 24/6/19

It’s nice to be reminded that the canal that runs through the very centre of Manchester still operates properly, a couple of hundred years after it was first built; and as ever, shots like these also remind me that this is the same canal, the Rochdale Canal, as runs through Hebden Bridge. So this boat could have been chugging through my home town a week or so ago. I imagine a few things about this scene have changed since the 1820s, however.

Chetham’s Library, Manchester

Wednesday 19th June 2019, 11.10am (day 2,855)

Chetham's Library, 19/6/19

Now that’s a proper library. And I was here for scholarly purposes, too. Occasionally it is still possible to feel that in my profession, things are as they were a couple of centuries ago. I mean, in a good way.

A day of meetings

Friday 14th June 2019, 12.30pm (day 2,850)

Refreshments, 14/6/19

Despite four HB pix in a row I have in fact spent most of the week in Manchester, but — to repeat a frequently-made recent point — it’s not been very exciting. Nor was today, but at least there was plenty of tea and coffee.

Shoe shop (self-portrait)

Sunday 9th June 2019, 12.05pm (day 2,845)

Shoe shop, 9/6/19

After two new countries (new to the blog, at least) and several new locations over the last week and a half, the pendulum swings, and the next three weeks see me mainly at home. I can’t promise excitement but I will do my best, better than today I hope, anyway. As you can see I’m pondering a change of style. (Actually the shoes were being bought for Joe.) And more place-related trivia — the first ever weekend of the blog where both Saturday and Sunday shots were taken in Manchester.

Awayday moment

Monday 3rd June 2019, 11.15am (day 2,839)

T&L awayday, 3/6/19

Ah, the departmental awayday, where we all turn up and profess to be interested in whatever it is we are awaydaying about. But the room had a certain grandeur to it (probably uncaptured in this shot of clutter). Suitable entertainment for my weekly appearance in Manchester?
