Cultural icon, late

Tuesday 14th July 2026, 10.35pm (day 5,437)

Phone box, late, 14/7/26

Sustaining this blog requires me to at least try to see familiar things in a new light now and again. There was no particular reason why the phone box in the centre of town caught my eye (on the way home from the cinema), but it did. Perhaps it was just looking very much like itself. These things, collectively, are a recognisable British icon — not quite technology, not quite architecture, a mixture of the two. This one is still functional as far as I know (that is, you can make telephone calls from it): it was being used as a library for a while but that is no longer the case.

Wires to play with

Friday 9th January 2026, 10.50am (day 5,251)

Box of wires, 9/1/26

I don’t think I would like this guy’s job as such, which, thinking about it, would seem to require spending a lot of time kneeling on cold, hard pavements, particularly in early January. On the other hand, tell me I’m not the only one who would quite like to while away some time unplugging and rearranging all of these, just for the hell of it.

Items for collection

Thursday 25th July 2024, 4.20pm (day 4,718)

Items by road, 25/7/24

Not quite the latest pic in the ‘abandoned shoes’ series, as there is a pair here. Along with the other items they seem to have been placed beside the Keighley Road pavement deliberately, for collection and subsequent use by anyone who needs them. So if anyone in Hebden Bridge does want an old telephone, a plastic wine glass, a nail file, the shoes or the other things which were in the pile but unseen — feel free to go and inspect.
