The eyes have it

Thursday 23rd October 2025, 6.15pm (day 5,173)

Halloween eyes, 23/10/25

It is now dark by the time I get back to the station after my Thursday afternoon lecture — but next week it will be dark before I even finish the class, thanks to the clocks going back this weekend. This is one of the usual ‘sculptures’ (I suppose we can call them that) put up around Manchester for Halloween, in case you hadn’t made the connection. Actually I think there’s been somewhat less overt plastic tat on display this year but maybe that’s just a personal opinion.

Being watched

Thursday 7th December 2023, 7.20pm (day 4,487)

CCTV cameras, 7/12/23

Watching them, watching me? Actually it’s very unlikely anyone is actually ‘watching’ at any given moment, but that’s Michel Foucault’s point about the surveillance society — people discipline themselves anyway. What I’d really like to know is why someone felt two cameras, pointing in the same direction, were really needed to monitor the ‘forgotten footbridge‘ at Manchester Victoria station. Why buy only one, when money can be wasted on two to do exactly the same pointless job?

Getting the eyes checked out

Vision is important to me, and, I assume, to everyone: get your eyes checked when you can…

Eyes of the peacock

Thursday 23rd April 2020, 3.40pm (day 3,164)

Peacock butterfly, 23/4/20

Peacock butterfly, that is. This specimen positively batted its eyes at me, clearly it wanted its close-ups doing; but then again, with a pair of eyes like that, who wouldn’t. It seems to be a good spring for butterflies, there are plenty of them about. Maybe it’s because we humans aren’t disturbing them so much this year, but more likely is just that it’s been warm and sunny.

David Bow-wow

Thursday 26th July 2018, 4.55pm (day 2,527)

Finn the dog, 26/7/18

This dog’s actual name is Finn, but with eyes like that the nickname David Bow-wow just seems right to me. He’s one of the more affectionate creatures you will meet.
