Attics get an airing

The sun is still shining. A few attics need airing, skylights need opening. Ours too — this photo was taken by sticking my head out of the roof.

In real terms the 1st January is of course, no different from any other day but we give it this symbolism, don’t we. No one can predict exactly what the new year will bring but unless something untoward happens I will definitely be travelling more outside the UK than I have since 2019, with at least one trip back to Toronto already booked, plus a return to St Helena, and hopefully a couple of other places too. Let’s start the year with Halifax, though: not far from home, but all the same, worth a visit now and again. With this shot — the 49th time I have depicted the place on here — it overtakes Moscow to become the 7th most-pictured location.
Roofscape

Don’t expect much in the way of variety of scene over the next few days. I spent all the month’s money in Cornwall, and payday is keenly awaited. Even the pigeon turns away somewhat disdainfully from the camera as I try to inject some interest.

A cold day today. Of course, ‘cold’ by British standards is not cold by, say, Canadian or central European standards, but we notice it in our own way. Look, someone in Royd Terrace has even lit a fire.
On the walk back from Old Town

Well, I was walking back from Old Town — I don’t know where this person’s itinerary had taken them. I am reminded now and again that I do live in a pleasant part of the world. That’s not an accident.
Grey December morning

Back home, back to the grey and gloom of a northern December, the everyday of the train journey to Manchester (here at Littleborough). It had to happen. LIke the birds speckled across this shot, let’s just live with it.
Chimney, red ivy

A boring Sunday spent mostly working. I did spot this on the way up the road to the garden; the ivy looks as if it is seeking to pull down the chimney and consume it. But perhaps ivy feels that about all human made constructions — it will probably get everything, in the end. And, as you can see, autumn is here.
The rooks know

Plenty of work to do after Easter, which today meant another day locked in the house with limited photographic opportunities. The knowing look on the face of this rook was the best I managed, and even then it’s somewhat out of focus. But then again, that also epitomises the day.
Manchester roofscape

I am still obliged to go into Manchester now and again. It’s good for the step count and the general variety but it’s not an edifying experience. Since March, it’s been a city of the nearly dead. Buses come past plastered in adverts that — in essence — shout “Live In Fear” and “It’s All Your Fault, You Know”. I pointed my camera upwards. This shot is taken from Cross Street; I like the red chimneys, and the corrugations of the tower block peering through the mists behind.
