I do like this picture, or I wouldn’t have chosen it — I always like the juxtaposition of so many random people in airports, and wonder where the yogi is off to (beyond just the answer ‘Amsterdam’, which is where the 05:55 KLM flight goes to, always the first flight to leave Manchester on any given day). The aquatic mural behind them is an added bonus.

But the main reason I chose it today is that finally, after five years and four and a half months of doing this blog, it means I’ve plugged the last gap in the hour-by-hour coverage of the day: this is the first photo to get in between 5:00 – 5:59 am. A bloody early morning in other words, I was up at 3am. Where was I heading? Well, if you don’t already know, you can find out tomorrow.

In Prague airport

My six days in Prague come to an end. It’s a very beautiful city, if you’ve never been, you should visit. I know the sign on this shot looks wonky: it’s funny how the camera can distort perspective quite easily sometimes.

In transit, Schiphol

So ends a 96-day run in the UK, a relatively long one for me: Tallinn in October was my last trip out. The weather was gross all day, so no in-flight panoramas I’m afraid. This shot epitomises the day more — like everyone else who flies around Europe on any kind of regular basis I am pretty familiar with Schiphol’s gigantic terminal. I quite like this shot because of the seeming dichotomy between the two sides of it; brutal vertical lines like that one in the middle don’t usually help the composition but here I think it works.

Although I have been doing plenty of work trips recently they have all been in the UK, and it’s been six months since I was actually at Manchester airport heading off somewhere for work. Today I changed planes in Schiphol, one of those hub airports that almost everyone who flies probably ends up at some point or another, and what a joyful place it is…. I was sitting behind this fence watching the arriving passengers get off the plane we were about to get on, and I kind of like this shot just for the effect, how the fence and the light make the woman look sort of ghostly.

And so it ends. The last night in Tanzania was spent waiting out a 90-minute flight delay before heading home. I chose this as today’s pic, at least in part, to fill in one of the last two remaining time gaps — this is the first picture to be taken within the hour of 2:00 – 2:59am, now only 5:00 – 5:59 remains undepicted in the near four years of this blog.

So I’ve caught up. Time to go and unpack. I had my priorities right this morning…

View from Istanbul airport

We flew to Tanzania on Turkish Airlines so changed planes in Istanbul, allowing this city to get onto the blog a second time following my trip to Beirut two years ago. Who knows, one day I might even leave the airport here — it’s a city I’ve never properly visited. This was taken from the plane as we taxied to the second take-off of the day.

Airport hotel bar

Well, I’m back from Kilimanjaro, and yes I did make the summit, but you will have to wait a short while to see it because I have several hundred photos to get through this morning. No excitement with this first one however, as I waited out a Friday night in one of the massive and anonymous hotels sitting just outside the boundary fence of London’s Heathrow airport. In such places, everyone is just waiting it out, aren’t they, including these three, with the bloke on the right ruminating about how much like Simon Cowell he looks, only without his cash (or why would he be in this hotel?). It will get more interesting… I promise.

In transit, Munich airport

This was just my transit airport, not my final destination. Bearing in mind where I have travelled to, going via Germany seemed rather bizarre, but ask my travel agent. Twenty years ago I once spent one of the worst and longest nights of my life trying to sleep in Munich airport (again, for reasons I can’t remember now), and I don’t like the city’s principal football team either (with apologies to their rivals 1860); so it’s not one of my favourite places. But today’s transfer was problem-free.

Foggy morning, Manchester airport

I don’t feel my photos on here have been that great lately, and one reason has been a decided lack of light. Except for last Tuesday (10th), which wasn’t bad, we pretty much haven’t seen the sun in March. Cold, grey, flat light throughout. This morning was little different. The fog was clearing as I boarded my plane to Bergen, via Copenhagen — the usual Long Commute — earlier flights this morning were disrupted by it but though I had a short delay it wasn’t so bad. I doubt the weather will change much in Bergen however, which is after all The City of Perpetual Rain, so no immediate prospect of a change to sunnier scenes…

Take-off, Dubrovnik airport

Take off, 23/10/14

Not my take-off, obviously — but we were next in line to head into this rather worrying sky. Mind you, I shouldn’t have been anywhere near being able to take this shot. I had to sit through a five-hour flight delay today on my way home from an enjoyable few days in Dubrovnik. But these things happen for a reason.
