Sitting on the steps

Monday 17th September 2018, 3.25pm (day 2,580)

EWB steps, 17/9/18

Day one of Welcome Week — and so there came a time in the day when we all needed to have a break. Picture taken through my office window, making it the third  in the last five days to be taken through glass. It also adds to the increasing lead of the 3.00 – 3.55pm time slot when it comes to the overall pattern of shot timing (see the stats), a statistical blip I attribute mainly to football matches kicking off at 3pm. But that is just personal trivia.

A kilo of white stuff

Sunday 16th September 2018, 2.10pm (day 2,579)

Jam sugar, 16/9/18

Don’t worry, I have not become Scarface. Not yet, anyway. But I was making blackberry jam this afternoon, and quite successfully too as it turned out.

Sending off

Saturday 15th September 2018, 3.35pm (day 2,578)

Sending off, 15/9/18

Thirty-five minutes in and the day goes from bad to worse for Tow Law Town, in the stripes; already 4-0 down at this point they have just had a player sent off, as well. Mind you seeing as the final result was 5-2 to hosts Nelson FC, technically this improved their performance.

The reason I like this picture is that the referee looks, to me anyway, to be about fourteen years old. A clear sign of middle age on my part, I know. Brave chap either way. Look at the size of the guy behind him, for instance.

Red, white and blue

Friday 14th September 2018, 5.35pm (day 2,577)

Red, white, blue, 14/9/18

Second photo in a row taken through glass: this lady was sat outside the pub as we enjoyed the usual Friday afternoon thing. A quiet weekend coming up, poor weather forecast although there was some sunshine coming in for this shot. A bit of oddness caused by the reflections but I still like the image.

Sunrise and Stoodley Pike

Thursday 13th September 2018, 6.40am (day 2,576)

Stoodley Pike sunrise, 13/9/18

The monument atop Stoodley Pike is visible for much of the train journey from Hebden Bridge to Todmorden, but the best view of it comes at the end, as one crosses the viaduct just prior to Todmorden station. You get about five seconds to see it properly before trees, then the station buildings, obscure the view. Seeing as I experience this view every time I get a train to Manchester (as long as I’m sat on the left), in a sense I have been waiting over seven years to offer up a version of this picture on the blog: so if I remain committed to never repeating myself, let’s only show it when it seems particularly worth it. Did it make the 5:35am alarm call (and 7:45am arrival in the office) worthwhile? Er…. mildly, I guess.

First lecture of the year

Wednesday 12th September 2018, 9.55am (day 2,575)

HNAP lecture, 12/9/18

Notes on laptop? Check. Camera? Present, obviously. Bag of plums for distribution? Check. Students? Well, some of them. Even if they are members of uni staff on the ‘Humanities New Academics Programme’. Here we go through to Christmas, either way.

Getting ready to open

Tuesday 11th September 2018, 3.15pm (day 2,574)

Opening Nightjar, 11/9/18

Not an eventful day at all. I am hiding at home doing my best to get ready for things opening at uni in a couple of weeks’ time. Like these guys,  but just on a bigger scale. The Nightjar bar sits below the Picture House and is one of those places that serves a dozen beers, all of them over-hopped and fruity, which is why these guys have beards.

Plums, plums, plums

Monday 10th September 2018, 9.00am (day 2,573)

Buckets of plums, 10/9/18

Plums. We are drowning in them. Possibly not as many as the all-time Bumper Plum Year that was 2015, but after a final harvest this morning, the now-empty tree has given up at least 30 lbs this year (14 kg). Want plums? We have them.

Sunday 9th September 2018, 3.35pm (day 2,572)

Greenfly on table, 9/9/18

Skkrrzzz-thttt. Lander to Moonbase Theta. Small crater to negotiate. Fzzztt.

Or perhaps it’s an aphid on a wet table. You decide.

How to save £8

Saturday 8th September 2018, 3.15pm (day 2,571)

Behind the fence, 8/9/18

I’m all for getting freebies when they are available but come on, it’s only £8 to get in and see your local non-league football team (in this case, Colne FC of the Northern Premier League D1 West) and you can stand under cover, out of the rain. You’re just being tight, is all.
