St. Peter’s Square tram stop

Thursday 6th April 2017, 9.00am (day 2,051)

Tram stop, 6/4/17

A decent run of morning shots in recent weekdays. I like this shot because of the general yellowness but then contrasted with the blue of the woman, and the lines up the middle and across the bottom. Composition then, I guess.

Thirteen crows gather

Wednesday 5th April 2017, 7.30am (day 2,050)

13 rooks, 5/4/17

I’ve given up trying to reliably identify whether the birds in any given shot are crows, jackdaws, rooks, whatever. Either way, they were swooping over the roof of my house in a rather sinister manner this morning. The superstitious might like to note there are 13 of them in shot…

Professor Schuster

Tuesday 4th April 2017, 10.45am (day 2,049)

Schuster bust, 4/4/17

Found myself in the Physics and Astronomy building on Manchester today, named for Arthur Schuster, physicist and coiner of the term ‘antimatter’ whose bust in the foyer currently sports a rather fetching pink bow tie and fluffy rabbit ears. And why not.

Window, Hebden Bridge Mill

Monday 3rd April 2017, 8.45am (day 2,048)

Mill window, 3/4/17

Definitely one of those days where I was glad there was some half-decent light on my brief foray out of the house this morning, as once I got back at about 9.30 I then stayed in all day teaching online. This window is a feature of the large mill that sits in Hebden Bridge town centre and is known — without much originality — as Hebden Bridge Mill. The new year’s foliage is just coming to bud. I seem to be having a run of square pictures at the moment; that’s two in a row, and three in the last week.

Leaving the house

Sunday 2nd April 2017, 4.25pm (day 2,047)

Mod leaves house, 2/4/17

An opportunity to picture the new coat that Joe acquired for his birthday last month, with suitable patch now installed. His choice, in case you were wondering — he does claim to like this popular beat combo.

Sunny afternoon

Saturday 1st April 2017, 5.10pm (day 2,046)

Sunny afternoon, 1/4/17

An inactive day, even indolent, but this was much needed. Sunny later, with the promise of spring in the air and look, Japan — we have blossoms too!

John, outside the Railway

Friday 31st March 2017, 5.50pm (day 2,045)

John, Railway, 31/3/17

As March becomes April and it turns into spring, it’s nice to be able to sit outside the Railway, in reasonable warmth and evening sunlight, for the first time in about a year and a half. John: meet the blog. Followers of the blog: meet John.

Lost goose

Thursday 30th March 2017, 8.00am (day 2,044)

Lost goose, 30/3/17

I would like to say this is a shot that highlights the biodiversity and ecological health of Manchester city centre. But actually I think this goose was rather lost and confused. Not that I was going to be the one to help it find its way back to the canal (or wherever); Canada geese are vicious buggers.

Tokyo Bay (blue…)

Wednesday 29th March 2017, 7.45am (day 2,043)

Tokyo bay, 29/3/17

The long journey home began at 7.15 Tokyo time, when the airport shuttle bus picked us up from the hotel. This shot was taken as it crossed the ‘Rainbow Bridge’ across Tokyo Bay. Not a rainbow of colours however: thanks to the rather alarmingly blue filters on the bus windows, which were so potent that I was seeing extra pink shades inside, to compensate. Still, it’s a nice effect. Farewell to Tokyo anyway — until next time? Sayonara…

Cherry blossom worship

Tuesday 28th March 2017, 10.40am (day 2,042)

Blossom worship, 28/3/17

Last full day in Japan. A couple of free hours this morning were spent in Shinjuku-gyoen park, along with several thousand other people, most of whom seemed to be cooing over the blossoming cherry trees (sakura), with dozens of Japanese engaging in what I could only perceive as a form of fundamental nature worship beneath each one. A total stranger asked me in the hotel elevator this evening whether I had seen the blossoms. They even have national news announcements, blossom forecasts if you like, stating where the best displays are to be found. I don’t dispute these plants’ beauty, but I can’t help thinking — you know, we have cherry blossoms in England too. They’re just there. But clearly I’m missing something.
