Bag on bridge

Monday 1st September 2014, 8.45am (day 1,103)

Bridge and bag, 1/9/14

It says much about the day when the most interesting photo taken all day was as I got the camera out of the bag to take a different shot, turned it on, looked at the screen as it pointed down past the plastic bag I was carrying and thought, OK, let’s do that one too. The railings look nicely symmetrical. But I’m reaching.

Alice’s Run (3 years on)

Sunday 31st August 2014, 11.10am (day 1,102)

Alice's run, 31/8/14

1,092 days ago, on September 4th 2011, I photographed this same event — it was day 10 of the blog. As then, I pictured it at the stonemason’s yard which resides on the canal, near Hebden Bridge station. With all other things being equal then you could check back if you like to see if my technique has improved at all over these three years of ample practice. Personally, I think it has; a bit. More than my running, anyway.

Baby chillies

Saturday 30th August 2014, 1.40pm (day 1,101)

Baby habaneros, 30/8/14

This house plant is being carefully tended at present. With luck and attention these little buds should each become chilli peppers strong enough to have its seeds come with warnings regarding the desirability of industrial strength rubber gloves when handling. Bring them on.

A morning in the countryside

Friday 29th August 2014, 8.15am (day 1,100)

Countryside morning, 29/8/14

A night out last night, stayed over in a motel (because you shouldn’t drink and drive — so given the choice I don’t drive). This was the scene outside our room this morning.

Electronic child-sitting

Thursday 28th August 2014, 2.45pm (day 1,099)

Joe watching LOTR, 28/8/14

All my photos from today were very boring. It’s the fag butt of the summer holidays and we are marking time until everyone goes back to school and work next week. There have been days of romping through the fields and spinneys (well, sort of) but not today. And as you might notice, it’s a DVD that goes on for a while.

Working the lock

Wednesday 27th August 2014, 12.05pm (day 1,098)

Canal lock, 27/8/14

An uneventful day, but at least the canal in Hebden Bridge usually comes up with some kind of animated scene, particularly at the moment when the summer tourist traffic is coming through. This family seemed proficient enough at working the lock. I wonder if the kid realises that two hundred years ago, all things being equal, he’d have been doing that full-time.

Ingleborough from the Hawes-Ingleton road

Tuesday 26th August 2014, 11.25am (day 1,097)

Ingleborough, 26/8/14

So what to do, and which picture to pick, to mark my birthday, and the point at which the title of this blog is now three years out of date? I’m off work this week so hired a car and took the family up to the Yorkshire Dales, a place which used to play a big part in my life but since 26/8/11 has failed to feature in it. I lived full-time in the Dales national park from October 1991 until September 1994 (and some part-time living after that); in summer 1994, 20 years ago now, I worked in a pub in Chapel-le-Dale, which is about two miles down the road from this point, beneath the western slope of that gorgeous lump of rock you see ahead of you, Ingleborough. A nice trip back to mark this particular anniversary. Happy 45th birthday to me and welcome to the fourth year of this blog.
