In the Christie Bistro

Thursday 1st November 2012, 1.30pm (day 434)

Christie Bistro, 1/11/12

Haven’t been feeling very inspired lately but a few moments of good light in a grey day, a lot of cropping and going monochrome raise the interest here. This is one of the University’s more laid-back corners, a café located in what, about 100 years ago, was the main campus library.

Mother and son, Hallowe’en

Wednesday 31st October 2012, 7.15pm (day 433)

Hallowe'en, 31/10/12

I don’t really do Hallowe’en myself, but others do, and it’s a good photo opportunity at least. Like, for this tender mother-and-son shot. Aren’t they cute.

Ink Landscape

Tuesday 30th October 2012, 12.55pm (day 432)

Ink landscape, 30/10/12

Tattoo, stage 2. It’s still not finished. It’ll be worth the pain, that’s what I keep telling myself.

Spooky castle, Nutclough

Monday 29th October 2012, 5.55pm (day 431)

Nutclough Tavern, 29/10/12

Warming up for Hallowe’en, the old Nutclough Tavern in Hebden Bridge puts in a bid for ‘spooky castle’ status, unfazed by a stiff recent challenge from the Beyer building at the University.

Front door, Old Gate

Sunday 28th October 2012, 1.45pm (day 430)

Front door, 28/10/12

Although duller and wetter than Friday and Saturday, today brought a very decent, and proper, weekend to an end, one I very much needed. Had gone through the last two blog posts without drawing any attention to how good the colours are in Hebden Bridge at the moment, so this is my attempt to make up for it. This is taken on the street of Old Gate.

Pizza cook

Saturday 27th October 2012, 2.50pm (day 429)

Pizza cook, 27/10/12

Beautifully sunny day today, the sort of day that makes you realise why we have autumn. We also have a ‘Food Festival’ in town at the moment, including a stall on which these gentlemen were making fresh pizza, and though I didn’t eat any it was definitely worth watching.

Cloud lips, or heart

Friday 26th October, 11.15am (UK time) (day 428)

Cloud lips, 26/10/12

It’s Clare’s birthday today so I let her have final choice on today’s photo. This was taken somewhere over the UK as we came into the final half hour of my flight back into Manchester airport this morning. A mouth? Lips? Had I got this a couple of seconds earlier you would have seen an almost perfect heart (as in the card suit shape) below the line. Anyway  – happy birthday dear 🙂 XXX

The view from my hotel room. This is my last night in Moscow…. until next time.

Afternoon stroll, Moscow

Wednesday 24th October 2012, 3.45pm (day 426)

Old Muscovite, 24/10/12

When you see Russians like this you can’t help but wonder what they were doing 50 years ago (around the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis). He looks quite well-to-do: I suspect he may very likely have been the sort of chap who would have had a key role to play in, say, The Spy Who Came In From The Cold. Yes, I’m stereotyping, but not without some justification, I feel.

Hardy chap, at least, particularly to be out without gloves on today. It was freezing in Moscow, literally, and – albeit briefly – I saw the first snow of the winter today. You have been warned.

My ride back

Tuesday 23rd October 2012, 7.00pm (day 425)

Novodevichy tower, 23/10/12

I know this is a poor photo in almost every way but it does sum up my day. Here I am in one of the world’s great cities and I sit working in one room, then get a ride to another room where I sit working, then get a ride home, have dinner and go to bed. I am offered the merest glimpses of the architecture, culture, nightlife, all these other things to enjoy. This, for instance, is a tower of the Novodevichy convent, certainly one of the most beautiful buildings in this city, glimpsed as I got my taxi back to the hotel. Well, I’m having the afternoon off tomorrow, hopefully more will be seen of Moscow then.
