Where’s the rest of me?

Thursday 4th October 2018, 9.30am (day 2,597)

Half a sofa, 4/10/18

Sofas left on the pavement, that’s one thing. But half a sofa? Like the single abandoned shoe, what’s the story here? Was it just one hell of a party? Has it been sheared off, caught in mid-transition through a wormhole to another dimension?

Stuck at home (with this view)

Monday 1st October 2018, 8.55am (day 2,594)

Nutclough, 1/10/18

The second monochrome shot in a row but it was a way of bringing some added interest to this view. I worked at home all day and did not leave the house. I know it’s a pretty distinctive view, in relative terms. But it is also everyday, for us at least.

In the junk shop

Sunday 30th September 2018, 3.45pm (day 2,593)

Typesetting tray, 30/9/18

This is one of those junk shops that has grandiose self-image and calls itself an “Antiques Centre” but we’ll let it off. I believe this object is an old typesetting tray, the kind of thing useful when typefaces came as hundreds of small carved pieces of metal. What practical use to anyone it is nowadays, I cannot imagine, but on the other hand it is a pretty cool lump of wood if you ask me. Not that I decided to lug it home or anything.

The walk to work

Friday 28th September 2018, 8.55am (day 2,591)

Manchester morning, 28/9/18

After a week in northern Finland, where it was rather damp and chilly throughout, at least there was sunshine when I had to go into Manchester today and, well, spend most of the day inside teaching. But never mind. This is a rather mundane shot in the end, with a green splotch of flare on it, but I like the shadows and light.

Hydropower, Oulu

Sunday 23rd September 2018, 8.35pm (day 2,586)

Oulu dam, 23/9/18

Time for a change of scene. Finland was the first country other than the UK to appear on this blog, back in September 2011, but it’s been a while (August 2012 to be precise) since I was last here properly. But Oulu is the venue for this year’s ECIL conference, which starts tomorrow, so here I am. This is the second most northerly city I have ever been, after Tromsø. I had only a short time here this evening to wander around, but this hydropower dam, built across the mouth of the main river, was an eye-catching sight. I’m here until Thursday.

Sunshine and showers

Friday 21st September 2018, 4.00pm (day 2,584)

Shower and sun, 21/9/18

Another grim day of weather, describable, at one level, as ‘sunshine and showers’, but the sunshine was brief and brought no succour, while the showers were prolonged and heavy. Here, they coincide, but I was still getting very wet.

Manchester Fluddle

Thursday 20th September 2018, 3.45pm (day 2,583)

Chethams fluddle, 20/9/18

A foul day of weather today, definitely the worst since early April. A reasonably pleasant morning tricked us all into going out without the right gear, a mistake very apparent later on when we had to return home in foul and heavy rain, and with plenty of time to remind ourselves about just how poor is the drainage on Manchester’s streets.

One L or two?

Tuesday 18th September 2018, 7.15am (day 2,581)

Lily's bar, 18/9/18

Another early morning in Manchester, where there’s still just about sunlight at 7.15am, but not for much longer in the year. Light, and time, enough to ponder why this establishment can’t seem to decide whether there’s one L or two (or indeed, three) in its name. It wasn’t open at this time, in case you were wondering.

Sitting on the steps

Monday 17th September 2018, 3.25pm (day 2,580)

EWB steps, 17/9/18

Day one of Welcome Week — and so there came a time in the day when we all needed to have a break. Picture taken through my office window, making it the third  in the last five days to be taken through glass. It also adds to the increasing lead of the 3.00 – 3.55pm time slot when it comes to the overall pattern of shot timing (see the stats), a statistical blip I attribute mainly to football matches kicking off at 3pm. But that is just personal trivia.

Getting ready to open

Tuesday 11th September 2018, 3.15pm (day 2,574)

Opening Nightjar, 11/9/18

Not an eventful day at all. I am hiding at home doing my best to get ready for things opening at uni in a couple of weeks’ time. Like these guys,  but just on a bigger scale. The Nightjar bar sits below the Picture House and is one of those places that serves a dozen beers, all of them over-hopped and fruity, which is why these guys have beards.
