Calder valley view

Friday 19th June 2020, 8.40am (day 3,221)

Valley view, 19/6/20

I accept that we are not strictly trapped, whether at home or in the Calder valley itself: but with nothing open out there except a few shops (and by no means all), it’s still house arrest in all but name. I agree there are worse places to be stuck but this afternoon and evening I felt like my head was going to pop unless this ends soon. But there are too many people who like this situation — profit from it, even. These are the ones who will drag us all down.

Phone box book swap

Wednesday 17th June 2020, 11.05am (day 3,219)

Phone box book swap, 17/6/20

This is very Hebden Bridge. Strictly a one-person only library, however — which I guess at the present time is seen as healthy.

In Allestree Park

Sunday 14th June 2020, 10.25am (day 3,216)

Allestree Park, 14/6/20

Sunday. Nominally a day of rest. Time to take in a bit of nature and contemplate the meaning of life, or whatever else takes one’s fancy. Time to bag my first urban county top, hence why I dragged the family to Derby today, making this the city’s third appearance on the blog. But a good day was had. If only the pubs would open.

The cobbles on Sackville Street

Wednesday 10th June 2020, 11.55am (day 3,212)

Sackville Street cobbles, 10/6/20

The cobbles that surface Sackville Street in Hebden Bridge are classic, but whether they are practical, ask the people that live there. I was just passing. Having reached the ‘bored stupid’ stage of lockdown myself, I wonder whether the painting in evidence here is recent, done by a local householder who has been on furlough for the last three months. But I guess the work looks older than that.

Thursday fish van

Thursday 4th June 2020, 1.35pm (day 3,206)

Fish van, 4/6/20

‘Paul’s Fresh Fish (from Fleetwood. Lancashire)’ has been present at Hebden Bridge’s Thursday market every week for years: the van appeared on the blog way back in December 2012 (a picture I always quite liked due to its sense of late December desolation and some decent lighting). He missed a couple of weeks in April, but clearly there is too much tuna in the Irish Sea off Fleetwood to sell on, so he’s back now.

Craggy island?

Saturday 30th May 2020, 1.35pm (day 3,201)

Rock in Hebden Water, 30/5/20

There continues to just about be enough visual interest around my locality to keep this all going. Who knows how long it will be before Authority deigns to say that we can not just travel to other places, but stay there, and explore. Until then, let’s fake it. The thing I like about this shot is that there’s little sense of scale. This could be a substantial island just off the coast, with cliffs behind that are hundreds of feet high. Or, just a little rock in a stream, well lit. You decide.

Meadow near Old Town

Saturday 23rd May 2020, 2.10pm (day 3,194)

Meadow, 23/5/20

As we wait for the various right-wing journalists, lobbyists for the tobacco industry and corporate executives who now hold positions of power in this country to do something, anything, to help get us out of this state of incarceration — I go on a walk, look at the meadows, and don’t hold my breath.

Hebden Water

Friday 22nd May 2020, 11.40am (day 3,193)

Hebden Water tag, 22/5/20

An awkward spot to tag, for sure. It takes a certain devotion. Though the river is very low at the moment, with it not having rained properly for weeks.

Closed to preserve public health

Tuesday 12th May 2020, 12.15pm (day 3,183)

Closed gym, 12/5/20

One could say it’s a paradox that we have chosen to help sustain the good health of the public by closing pretty much all the facilities which exist to help one stay healthy. But it’s not a paradox — it’s simply evidence of how bollixed up everything is at the moment.

Another photowhack — they are coming (relatively) thick and fast under lockdown. I like the random arrangement of rectangles, but perhaps I am reaching.

Dandelion snow

Friday 8th May 2020, 5.05pm (day 3,179)

Dandelion snow, 8/5/20

The white dots that speckle this whole image are not the result of some camera fault. They are dandelion seeds, storms of which blew over Hebden Bridge this evening, as they have for a few days now. The warm, dry weather is bringing them out but also, this year, there are not so many lawns being mowed regularly — not the public ones, anyway. Perfect conditions for them, then. There will be some allergies being born at the moment I can tell you.
