Bus stop near ‘Revolution’, Oxford Road

Tuesday 7th January 2014, 10.10am (day 866)

Bus_stop, 7/1/14

The period since Christmas Eve has been very relaxing, but not very photographically inspiring. Three things have not helped this. One: I’ve been mostly isolated at home. Two: it’s been gloomy and grey. Three: the Mac died on 9th December and as yet had not been replaced.

Three things then happened today: One, I left the dale, only to Manchester, but it’s a change of scene; Two: the sun came out (in the morning anyway); Three: I have a Mac back 🙂  I like this picture, first one I’ve really thought was decent since Christmas Eve.

Ex-pub, Hebden Bridge

Saturday 4th January 2014, 10.00am (day 863)

Ex-pub, 4/1/14

The former ‘Hole in the Wall’ pub did feature on a post or two (like this one) back in late 2012 when it was temporarily accommodating a pub business forced out of its usual premises due to the flooding that summer, but it has been closed again for a year or so now. I believe it will soon be renovated, but I doubt it will remain a pub.

Slayed hedge, 2/1/14

I’m still off work, still not much going on so only everyday scenes to work with, and I know that even then this isn’t a great photo. However, it does document the devastation wreaked on the hedge that runs between our garden (allotment) and the path next to it. It needed doing but still…

Another year, still here. But that’s a good thing.

Hebden Water and Hebden Bridge Town Hall

Friday 27th December 2013, 12.55pm (day 855)

Hebden Water, 27/12/13

Back home for the rest of the year. This photo has the same subject matter as the one posted a year ago today; the Hebden Water, which joins the River Calder just below this point. The building is the new extension to our Town Hall, opened in 2012.

Dalton Square, Lancaster

Monday 23rd December 2013, 7.25pm (day 851)

Dalton Square, 23/12/13Visiting the in-laws’ for the annual Christmas stuff. This square sits beside Lancaster Town Hall, the large building in the background, and is attractively lit for the season — suitable accompaniment to the showing of It’s a Wonderful Life at the nearby cinema, another annual tradition in our household.

The shortest day

Saturday 21st December 2013, 2.10pm (day 849)

Solstice, 21/12/13

Thanks to the valley wall to the south of the town, Hebden Bridge gets an earlier sunset each day than the planet’s axial tilt otherwise decrees; and today is the earliest of all.

Oxford Street, Manchester

Thursday 19th December 2013, 9.40am (day 847)

Oxford Street, 19/12/13

I’ll post this now partly because I am on a machine that works properly (not consistently true for me at the moment, nor will it be until into January now), but also because the sun has long disappeared behind clouds: this beautiful morning light was, unlike on Tuesday, all we got today. So I doubt I’ll get a better shot later. Having done this walk a lot, I know where the sun shines in Manchester city centre on a winter’s day by now, and at around this time on Oxford Road/Oxford Street (its continuation), it shines right down the road as if it was the avenue of a stone circle like Avebury. In fact, considering it’s the solstice on Saturday, perhaps I am on to something there.

Subway under Brook Street, Manchester

Friday 13th December 2013, 8.50am (day 841)

Subway, 13/12/13

There is often beauty in unexpected places. This is all done with concrete, graffiti and strips of fluorescent light.

Outside the Student Services Centre

Wednesday 11th December 2013, 10.25am (day 839)

Ramp at uni, 11/12/13

I’m still without proper photo management software and it may be into January before I get it back, so I shall have to make do. It was my students’ graduation day today, I did get photos of the event but in the end I have gone with this one — largely because of Shaun the Sheep’s appearance, which amuses me.
