University of Manchester campus

Thursday 22nd March 2012, 1.55pm (day 210)

Daffodils on campus, 22/3/12

I know I did this theme a couple of days ago but there really wasn’t any other photo today which encapsulated what was an absolutely glorious spring day.

Incidentally, those who know the Manchester campus may be bemused as to where this is, because it really must be one of the least green campuses in Britain – there is hardly any green space, plus this bloody big road running right through the middle of it. Trust me however: this is just outside Blackwell’s, under the ramp to the shopping precinct and opposite the Kilburn building.

Spring Sunday in town

Sunday 18th March 2012, 1.30pm (day 206)

Busker in square, 18/3/12

Beautiful day today, a proper spring Sunday. Lots of activity in the town square, including this busker and then there’s the kid on the right auditioning for his part in the local version of We Need To Talk About Kevin. All fairly normal for Hebden Bridge.

Outside the back door of the Frou Frou Club

Saturday 3rd March 2012, 10.50pm (day 191)

Back door, Frou Frou club, 3/3/12

Gosh, a Friday and a Saturday night out in the same weekend. I remember this, it’s called a social life.

I like this shot, particularly the disembodied head lurking to the left. Not bad, considering I’m usually in bed by this time.

James, on video at Deansgate library

Monday 13th February 2012, 2.10pm (day 172)

James is an archivist at the John Rylands Library, Deansgate, Manchester, a historic public Victorian library in the city centre. I brought my Media & Information Literacy students here today for a ‘field trip’ and was also videoing it for the benefit of my distance learning students. Hence, being able to juggle two cameras simultaneously and get this pic using both, in effect. Who says men can’t multitask, eh?

(I’m back at the Deansgate library tomorrow morning to do some more filming, so no promises, but there may be more. If you’re interested, follow this link to their web site.)

Arrival in Manchester Victoria

Thursday 9th February 2012, 7.35am (day 168)

Grumpy commuters, 9/2/12

Well, here we all are on the early morning cattle truck, pulling into a freezing cold, damp station (voted one of the 10 worst in the country a couple of years ago), and probably all off, like I was, to do something that our employer has decided is terribly important but almost certainly isn’t.

No wonder everyone’s face was like this. Damn sure mine was.

Movie Premiere, Amsterdam

Monday 23rd January 2012, 7.40pm (day 151)

Movie premiere, 23/1/12

What a terribly glamorous life I must lead, right? Actually, no. I did shuttle over to Amsterdam this morning (one of the world’s great cities – visit, if you never have), but that was for a boring old academic conference. On my way back to the hotel this evening I passed what was clearly a movie premiere and just inserted myself among the paparazzi for a few moments to see what I could get.

Why are people so obsessed with celebrities by the way? I mean here not as actors (see ‘Tom Baker’, two days ago – which I accept is a case for the prosecution), but as ‘personalities’? I don’t understand it. If people are good at acting, fine, admire them for that, but then again there are people who are good at nursing, at controlling air traffic, etc. They don’t get cameras shoved up their arse on a regular basis.

Matchday hospitality, the Globe Arena

Monday 26th December 2011, 2.00pm (day 123)

Matchday hospitality, 26/12/11

I’ve never heard a satisfactory explanation for why we call it Boxing Day. Whatever it means historically, these days it usually means, for me, attending a football match if there’s one in the vicinity. Today therefore becomes the Globe Arena’s second appearance on this site (after September 23rd). We did this one rather differently, however; our Christmas present for Carol & Dave, our in-laws, was to sample the full matchday hospitality package, with dinner in the suite under the main stand. Interesting experience.

This lady appears today for no other reason than I think she looks good in this photo. She becomes, begging her pardon, the oldest person so far on this blog.

The spinner’s hands

Saturday 17th December 2011, 12.05pm (day 114)

Spinner's hands, 17/12/11

Another craft fair. I did OK. It’s a two-day event – back there tomorrow. As will be this lady, carding and spinning wool from the local hillsides. Looked like a lot of hard work. Taking photos is much easier – at least physically. Selling them? That takes work.
