The spinner’s hands

Saturday 17th December 2011, 12.05pm (day 114)

Spinner's hands, 17/12/11

Another craft fair. I did OK. It’s a two-day event – back there tomorrow. As will be this lady, carding and spinning wool from the local hillsides. Looked like a lot of hard work. Taking photos is much easier – at least physically. Selling them? That takes work.

The Amex Stadium, Brighton

Sunday 6th November 2011, 4.15pm (day 73)

Amex stadium, 6/11/11

The story behind this place is such a long and difficult one to tell – North & Hodson’s book Build a Bonfire will give you the first part, doubtless someone will write the second instalment one day. Suffice it to say that as a Brighton fan making my inaugural visit here this afternoon, when I first entered it, I cried. Just a little bit.

Today’s result: Brighton & Hove Albion 2, Barnsley 0. We won’t mention the failure of Southern rail to get me and a few thousand other fans back to Brighton because of a ‘staff shortage’. I mean, it’s not like they knew we were coming.

Halloween Burlesque Party

Saturday 29th October 2011, 8.00pm (day 65)

Halloween burlesque, 29/10/11_low-res

Let’s edit out the text that originally accompanied this photo, written last night when I was too inebriated to be lucid and pithy and all those other things I’d like these texts to be. Let me instead just reiterate what a good night it was. The audience were asked not to take photos of the performance and stick them online – so I should respect that – though it’s a shame, as I got some good ones including of the wife making her own performance debut. But the audience were also a sight worth recording. Happy Halloween – a couple of days early, it is true.

ICT in Education conference, Stockport

Friday 14th October 2011, 8.45am (day 50)

ICT in Education conference, 14/10/11res

Because of it’s ridiculously early start time I turned up to this opening presentation late, and have no idea what is happening here. But what the hell, the shot of this guy with the impressive data projection on his face is interesting enough, and from what I saw of the rest of the presentation, you didn’t really need to know what was going on.

The ‘outtakes’ have been published to mark this, the 50th day of the blog. See the ‘best of the rest’ page – a permalink to which can be found in the menu at the top.

Outside the Conservative Party Conference, Manchester

Tuesday 4th October 2011, 12.55pm (day 40)

Words, 4/10/11

The Conservative Party Conference continues to provide a rich seam. I’m almost sorry I’m not going in tomorrow. Some fundamentalists wield biblical slogans, others manifestos and soundbites. But they’re all basically the same: they lay blame for the world’s problems on anything and everything other than themselves.

Freshers’ Fair, University of Manchester

Thursday 22nd September 2011, 1.45pm (day 28)

Permaculture guy, 22/9/11_low-res

I got interviewed by ‘student TV’ today so found myself in the annual chaos that is the Freshers’ Fair. I know this picture is a bit blurred but as you can’t read the sign, it says, ‘Gardening and Permaculture Society’. Now I am not at all mocking this guy: I have found myself interested enough in gardening over the last few years. And though I didn’t talk to him, he seemed pretty sweet. But I’m sorry, if you look up ‘walking cliche’ in the dictionary, it says ‘see him’.

The Official Photographer, Simon Building, University of Manchester

Wednesday 7th September 2011, 1.10pm (day 13)

Official photographer, 7/9/11

At this meeting I attended today this guy was taking photographs of everyone, as soon as they opened their mouths. He was a nice guy, though. At the lunch break I said, ‘You’ve been taking photos of everyone, now I’m going to take your photo, and put it on my web site.’ And so, I did.
