Cinema steps

Sunday 15th June 2014, 1.50pm (day 1,025)

Cinema steps, 15/6/14

Was taken here this afternoon to see Who Framed Roger Rabbit? as a Fathers’ Day treat — and a tribute to Bob Hoskins (RIP). Maybe this isn’t the most inspiring photo (with all due respect to the person in it); but it brings to an end a full month of pictures that, with the exception of one Lake District shot, have all been taken in Hebden Bridge or Manchester, or points inbetween. But I’m off travelling again tomorrow.

On Todmorden station

Wednesday 11th June 2014, 4.15pm (day 1,021)

Tod station, 11/6/14

A sunny moment captured through the window of a train on the opposite platform. What I want to know is whether the cat is also intending to catch the imminent Manchester service.

Hebden Bridge Handmade Parade, 2014

Sunday 8th June 2014, 12.45pm (day 1,018)

Handmade Parade, 8/6/14

Welcome back to the Handmade Parade, pictured also in 2012 and 2013 — an amazing outpouring of creativity and effort. I just photograph it, taking 319 pictures today in one hour and five minutes. To pick one is not easy (others will go on my Flickr site — link at bottom); with the colours and costumes being almost a given I try to focus on the good faces, and then it’s a matter of hoping the focus is just right. I’m particularly happy with this shot because this was played for and got.

Free hugs, 1/6/14

How very Hebden Bridge. Welcome to June.

String section

Friday 30th May 2014, 10.55pm (day 1,009)

String section, 30/5/14

Second gig in a week, and there’ll be another one tomorrow. Unlike last Sunday’s arena event this was in the more intimate surroundings of the Trades Club, Hebden Bridge. And more mellow. Though not necessarily better.

Challenge

Monday 26th May 2014, 1.20pm (day 1,005)

Stepping stones, 26/5/14

I was willing this kid across these stepping stones — and he did make it — but I was just hoping he’d not set out to conquer his fear until after I’d got the shot.

In the crowd — Nine Inch Nails, Manchester

Sunday 25th May 2014, 10.20pm (day 1,004)

Nine Inch Nails, 25/5/14

Tough choice today! Felt moved to do a Flickr album for the first time in ages as I felt I had a few to choose from. In the end though I went with this one, of the crowd rather than the band, because I was trying for ages to capture this bloke with a good combination of arm position and lighting, and then when I did so, the focus is all wrong — but! It still works.

Oh and by the way. NIN rock.

Stallholder, Saturday market, Hebden Bridge

Saturday 24th May 2014, 11.15am (day 1,003)

Pet stall owner, 24/5/14

Motivating myself to keep things going after 1,000 days is not helped by being on (for me) a reasonably long run of time just in Hebden Bridge and Manchester. From 16th May until 15th June this is basically where I am. Hard to find new scenes, but I don’t think this one has made it before — the entrance to the occasional Saturday craft fair (which has been pictured from inside in the past, but never from here).

Cossacks

Wednesday 14th May 2014, 7.50pm (day 993)

Cossacks, 14/5/14

My hosts/friends at the Moscow School (the organisation that is the reason I come to visit Moscow so comparatively frequently) invited me to come to this event at the Russian Army Theatre this evening. Lots of folk dancing and its associated benefits like beautiful women, beautiful costumes and manly men doing manly things with swords, like these guys. And not done for the tourists either — in fact Russia is one of the few places in the world where this kind of cultural event is still seen as a normal evening’s entertainment, there were lots of families here tonight.

I still can’t quite grasp the nature of the Cossacks, are they a separate ethnic group, something one is born into, or a cultural choice one makes, sort of like declaring oneself a Celt or a Gaul? Anyway, it doesn’t matter. I’m sure most of us would like an excuse to pull a face/pose like these two guys now and again.

And, by the way, I have one week left until day 1,000.

The tension…

Saturday 3rd May 2014, 2.20pm (day 982)

Tension, 3/5/14

Impossible to get a shot that was both photographically interesting and which captured the drama of today’s events at the City Ground, Nottingham. This picture is as good as I could manage to capture the tension that was released by Leo Ulloa’s 92nd minute goal, one already burned into the memories of all Brighton & Hove Albion fans I am sure. If you want to read more about that, go to this page. I am too drained. Seagulls!!
