Mr. James Brown (no, not that one)

Tuesday 17th May 2016, 3.15pm (day 1,727)

James Brown, 17/5/16

We worked out today that come September it will be twenty years since I met James, we shared a flat in my final year at Leeds University, subsequently he was best man at my wedding (coming up for 17 years ago). We haven’t seen each other much lately as he has lived in Taiwan for more than a decade now, but he passed through Manchester today, as did I briefly. Last time I saw him was 2011 not long before I started doing this blog so today was his first chance to appear on it. I know he normally looks happier than this but that’s what overnight flights from Asia do to the complexion, I guess. Good to see you mate, sorry it wasn’t for longer.

The Railway diaspora

Saturday 23rd April 2016, 3.35pm (day 1,703)

Railway diaspora, 23/4/16

Since the Boxing Day floods took out 95% of the town centre four months ago, five of Hebden Bridge’s pubs have reopened: the White Lion (which never shut), the Old Gate, the Crown, the Trades Club and the Fox and Goose. However, this leaves seven that remain closed: the White Swan, the Shoulder of Mutton, Nelson’s, the Sports & Social, Stubbing Wharf, the Albert and the one that I and many friends feel most keenly, the Railway. Martin and Shelley, pictured here, are members of the Railway diaspora, drinkers in exile (in this case in the Old Gate). Perhaps we will all return home some time soon but to be honest at the moment there is little sign of it.

Students point cameras at me

Wednesday 13th April 2016, 1.45pm (day 1,693)

Playful horse, 12/4/16

Teaching has restarted after the Easter break so I guess I should put in the occasional appearance on campus. It’s also that time of year when the assignment kicks in on the video production course, and some students develop an urge to point cameras at me and others for educational ends. Shen (left, from China) and Gatya (Indonesia) here anticipate that I will be able to talk about something interesting over the next ten minutes or so.

A rare appearance on the blog for my office: the sharp-eyed may note the newspaper cutting on the wall celebrating Brighton’s League Cup victory over Manchester City in 2009. And why not.

George in Arundel Park

Sunday 10th April 2016, 9.45am (day 1,690)

George, Arundel Park, 10/4/16

My friend George featured on the blog fairly recently (in February in fact) — but I like her purple hair, just right for this very pleasant morning in West Sussex, so let’s feature her again…

Liz and Doug

Friday 18th March 2016, 12.40pm (day 1,667)

Liz and Doug, 18/3/16

I don’t often do shots of working life, usually because it’s neither very interesting, nor very appropriate to stick cameras in the face of people I’m working with. But today should be a work shot,  to mark the end of a bloody busy week. And I get away with it today and I like it because though both these people, Liz and Doug, have played a relatively significant role in my life over the last whatever years they have never met before today. Doug’s second appearance on the blog (after this one), Liz’s first.

George at York station

Friday 19th February 2016, 8.20pm (day 1,639)

George, York station, 19/2/16

This is our friend George who came to visit tonight, here we are waiting for the train back home after time in York. I like this shot because of her blue hair nearly perfectly framed in the huge roof canopy of this famous old railway station.

Railway crew, in exile

Tuesday 29th December 2015, 6.00pm (day 1,587)

In White Lion, 29/12/15

Determined not to do a post today that was directly flood-related, so this isn’t one, although it’s hardly the best-quality pic of this or any year. The White Lion is currently the only pub remaining open in Hebden Bridge town centre, so the Railway crew have relocated — while they ponder the fact that their home turf may well never reopen.

I do note that the White Lion is the oldest building in Hebden, built in the 16th century when there was literally nothing else here — and that it is the only building in the town centre not to have been flooded on Saturday. It has only struck me today that this is not a coincidence. The builders observed — then they built — and they were right. Everyone else who has since built here has taken a rather more shortsighted view.

Lucy’s first Christmas Eve

Thursday 24th December 2015, 1.35pm (day 1,582)

Lucy, 24/12/15

Lucy was born on March 12th this year so is about to experience her first Christmas…. Perhaps she looks a little glum here but I think that is just because I caught her mid-crisp. I wish her a happy one, and hope you all have a good one too…

Thursday 17th December 2015, 3.20pm (day 1,575)

Kim, graduation, 17/12/15

Congratulations to all my students who graduated from the class of 2015 at today’s ceremony — and indeed to all students everywhere, who work bloody hard, you know.
