View over Halifax

Sunday 16th November 2025, 2.00pm (day 5,197)

View over Halifax, 16/11/25

The view of Halifax from its northern districts (Illingworth, Holmfield) is as good as one could probably expect of the place. The kids attending Trinity Academy school get this all the time, in fact. Wainhouse Tower, the world’s tallest folly (official), makes at least its fourth appearance on here.

Boats on the Bay

Sunday 2nd November 2025, 12.10pm (day 5,183)

Morecambe Bay boats, 2/11/25

The Bay in question being Morecambe Bay. I wonder how often these get used — going on the state of the sail of the one on the right at the back, I assume, not very often, even when the tide is in. Perhaps this shot is a little too over-contrasted but I was playing with settings on the camera, and it was a rather moody day of weather — note the chunk of rainbow to the top left.

Misty morning, with bird

Monday 29th September 2025, 8.20am (day 5,149)

Misty house view plus bird, 29/9/25

As stated yesterday — a second shot from the same place: from yesterday’s shot, pan to the left, go up a ways and pull back out and this comes in view. Not always with the mist, though there’s usually a bird around somewhere.

Stormy sky

Thursday 11th September 2025, 3.45pm (day 5,131)

Stormy sky, 11/9/25

Thunderstorms were coming and going all afternoon: here, we are perhaps a quarter of an hour from the next one. In response, the local rail system threw its hands up in fear and went into another one of its spasms, but I just stayed in and watched.

Sunshine and showers

Friday 5th September 2025, 1.10pm (day 5,125)

Rainbow, 5/9/25

I would have preferred more of the sunshine and less of the showers, but at least this is a combination known to produce some pleasing atmospheric effects. The mountain behind is called Stob nan Coinnich Bhacain — please don’t ask me to pronounce that — but my destination for the day was Ben Vorlich, County Top number 107. More photos are therefore on the other blog.

Loch Lomond at dusk

Thursday 4th September 2025, 8.55pm (day 5,124)

Loch Lomond, 4/9/25

It’s very good that I can still find reasons, opportunity and (though this was not an expensive trip) the money to come and spend Thursday nights in places like this. As seen from outside the Ardlui Hotel, which even has its own train station.

Cricket landscape, Oxenhope

Saturday 23rd August 2025, 2.20pm (day 5,112)

Oxenhope cricket, 23/8/25

I’ve done quite a few ‘football landscapes’ over the years but never a cricket one. Not that I’ve changed my sporting allegiance — this was just seen in passing. While I was on my way to a football match, in fact. Oxenhope would make a picturesque backdrop for just about any sport, though.

Fishing in the canal

Monday 18th August 2025, 3.25pm (day 5,107)

Huddersfield Narrow Canal, 18/8/25

Not the Rochdale canal, as is usually depicted on here — today it is the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, which follows its previous appearance (22/3/2015) with a shot that may be equally pleasing to traditionalists. In the depths of August, a small boy (well, OK, about 12-13) casts his line for sport. Get it while it lasts, kid, in a couple of weeks you’ll be back at school. Then again, so will I. (Actually the HNC has been on three times now: the other was 21/9/19.)

Redcar Beach

Saturday 16th August 2025, 4.00pm (day 5,105)

Redcar beach, 16/8/25

Only in Britain do we really try to create seaside resorts on north-facing coasts at latitudes like 56º above the equator: but Redcar, near Middlesbrough, just about gets away with it thanks to having a really excellent beach that stretches for miles. Even when the sun is out, though, you still need to be quite hardy to make a day of it, but obviously this family have the necessary genetic qualities.

Farewell to Stromness (early)

Saturday 2nd August 2025, 6.40am (day 5,091)

Stromness morning, 2/8/25

Another landscape, but why not. This was the last view seen of Orkney on this trip, as the 6.30am ferry back to Thurso turned itself around and gave its passengers one final chance to admire the photogenic qualities of Stromness, with the hills of Hoy behind. I would come back here with no qualms at all. Orkney is a great place and there should be more like it.

By a total coincidence, the picture taken ten years ago today was also timed as 6:40am. I remember this because it was another rather fine landscape, captured near the summit of Kilimanjaro on 2nd August 2015.
