Flowers into beans

Thursday 14th August 2025, 4.25pm (day 5,103)

Red bean flowers, 14/8/25

Another day with very little to see, but as the sun was shining the garden once again obliges. These little red flowers are due to become green beans, and I believe that’s a junior version already curving itself attractively down towards the bottom of the picture. Vegetables and fruits of all kinds have done very well this year, even for a black-fingered (opposite of green-fingered) doofus like me.

Diversity of beetroot

Sunday 24th November 2024, 2.50pm (day 4,840)

Beetroots, 24/11/24

These various beetroot all came out of the ground within a couple of feet of each other. I’m sure they were all from the same pack of seeds…. I like the diversity of colour, also that this shot does imply they had all been in the ground ten minutes before it was taken: which was, more or less, the case. I think some pickling is in order.

Fresh food for sale…

Thursday 22nd August 2024, 11.45am (day 4,746)

Market stall, 22/8/24

The Thursday market is the place to come in Hebden Bridge for fish, vegetables, food of all kinds, and I certainly indulged today. Was it warm? No — autumn is in the post, I feel, but that’s why we stock up with food at this time of year.

The garden produces

Sunday 24th September 2023, 2.00pm (day 4,413)

Garden. produce, 24/9/23

It’s not just plums…. The apples are doing well this year, as are the leeks, and is that even a couple of beetroot poking up from the soil? Sure is. None of this makes a big dent in the food bill but it’s still satisfying.

Audrey II

Saturday 20th May 2017, 11.45am (day 2,095)

Audrey II artichokes, 20/5/17

Purple globe artichokes on the shelf of the grocery? Or possibly Audrey II from Little Shop of Horrors? Seeing as these materialised in exactly the same spot as the aliens from the planet Kohl Rabi, I suspect the latter, and that in Valley Organics lies, in fact, a gateway to an alien micro-dimension.

The aliens from the planet Kohl Rabi

Saturday 12th December 2015, 11.10am (day 1,570)

Alien kohl rabi, 12/12/15

“Bzzzt. Frpppp. Bzzt. Calling Purple Leader. Calling Purple Leader. We seem to have been captured by the humans, after a disastrous miscalculation of scale.”

“This is Purple Leader. I think I can get my pseudopod in place, and flip the ship over. Then they’ll be sorry…… Ah, sod it. What does ‘£1.00 each’ mean anyway?”

Grocer’s stall, Oxford Road

Tuesday 3rd November 2015, 4.20pm (day 1,531)

Veg stall, 3/11/15

This stall is a familiar sight on the walk back up Oxford Road into the city centre: it’s there in the same spot every weekday, and maybe weekends too. I like this shot because it’s the one I meant to take, only it’s gone monochrome to obscure the fact that the square behind the woman’s head was a totally incongruous bright purple on the initial version. It still looks a bit conspicuous here but overall the effect is much better in black and white.

First harvest from the garden

Sunday 30th August 2015, 11.50am (day 1,466)

First harvest, 30/8/15

Always a pleasing event of the year. Not many blackberries around yet, but they will come. Plums… for us will, I hope, be just as much in glut as they were two years ago. Believe me, if you live in Hebden Bridge and want cheap plums, give us a couple of weeks, we will be overflowing.
