Huddle

Friday 13th June 2014, 12.35pm (day 1,023)

University Place, 13/6/14

The main thing that annoys me about this shot are the fire exit warning signs. The non-parallel nature of the lines at the top is explained by the fact this building is cylindrical in shape. So ends a week spent mainly on campus in Manchester.

Studying outside the Learning Commons

Tuesday 12th November 2013, 2.55pm (day 810)

Studying outside, 12/11/13Coat and thermos flask notwithstanding, the fact one can be doing this in Manchester in mid-November is a sign that we continue to have plenty of mild weather. The more insane newspapers in the UK seem convinced that the storm that has hit the Philippines will somehow leap two oceans and half a world and, specifically, hit middle-class districts of the UK in the next few days, but there’s no evidence of this. (There never is very much evidence for anything included in the insane newspapers.)

First day of teaching…

Monday 23rd September 2013, 10.00am (day 760)

Students checking map, 23/9/13

…so not everyone is yet completely sure where they should be going for their 10:00 lecture. The girl with the umbrella was intently studying the campus map this morning.

In the library foyer

Tuesday 8th January 2013, 11.50am (day 502)

Uni library, 8/1/13

If it wasn’t for that flash of green on the shot (behind the girl’s head) this one would be perfect…

Incidentally if all goes according to plan I am only going to be on the Manchester campus three more days until mid-June – tomorrow, Thursday and next Thursday. Travelling awaits…

The ‘Development of Educational Technology’ class

Monday 15th October 2012, 1.50pm (day 417)

DET class, 15/10/12

Seeing as I seemed to spend most of the day teaching in one way or another it seems appropriate to use a picture of a class to encapsulate the day.

The three students in the foreground are Chinese and Korean, the book they are looking at is in Arabic. I could give away my pedagogical secrets and tell you why, but then I’d have to kill you. (Or you could just enroll on my degree, of course.)

Welcome back

Tuesday 18th September 2012, 9.15am (day 390)

Purple person, 18/9/12

All the students arrive all at once, and it’s both the most hectic time of the year as well as the most optimistic, in some ways. Everyone’s fresh, we meet people for the first time and learn about their hopes and aspirations. Scary time too, for them at least. Hence the ‘Purple People’ who have dotted themselves around the campus, and they’re being used, as you see here.

Significant academic year for me too. I am on sabbatical in the second semester and from mid-December to late August will not be in Manchester at all. January – June I will be in Australia. Looking forward to it…

University of Manchester campus

Thursday 22nd March 2012, 1.55pm (day 210)

Daffodils on campus, 22/3/12

I know I did this theme a couple of days ago but there really wasn’t any other photo today which encapsulated what was an absolutely glorious spring day.

Incidentally, those who know the Manchester campus may be bemused as to where this is, because it really must be one of the least green campuses in Britain – there is hardly any green space, plus this bloody big road running right through the middle of it. Trust me however: this is just outside Blackwell’s, under the ramp to the shopping precinct and opposite the Kilburn building.
