Waiting for the exam

Friday 17th February 2017, 11.55am (day 2,003)

Waiting for exam, 17/2/17

I spent the last few hours of the working week as an examiner for some assessed presentations. A stream of fresh and (usually) interesting 20- to 21-year-olds coming in to convince us of their plans for world domination. And you know? A few of them have a shot at it. I like this shot because of the tea ladies in the background (they had just cleared away the detritus of the morning shift), the left-hand student’s incipient bubblegum moment, the relatively grand surroundings of the very finely-named Whitworth building…. And that it’s Friday. I’ve had a 6-day week, I need a weekend.

Welcome meeting

Wednesday 21st September 2016, 10.55am (day 1,854)

Welcome event, 21/9/16

Every year at this time the campus goes from being peaceful and quiet to a heaving mass of people. Still, if it wasn’t for them none of us would be doing what we’re doing. Sam Harris of the International Society at Manchester says hi to the gathered new postgraduates in Education: who collectively I am now responsible for…. (there are a couple of hundred more in the room than pictured here). Let’s hope they all fulfill their potential over the next 11 months or so.

Campus food stall

Tuesday 31st May 2016, 1.10pm (day 1,741)

Campus food stall, 31/5/16

A row of tents, from which are emerging a range of nice-smelling foodstuffs each lunchtime, seems to have established itself recently on Bridgeford Street on the uni campus. Probably it is just an exam season thing, but they seem to be getting enough business to make it a viable permanent fixture.

Last research methods class of the year

Wednesday 4th May 2016, 3.45pm (day 1,714)

Research methods class, 4/5/16

Bless ’em, look, they’re all working…. only took all year 🙂  We have entered the last week of teaching for me in Manchester in 2015-16.

Students point cameras at me

Wednesday 13th April 2016, 1.45pm (day 1,693)

Playful horse, 12/4/16

Teaching has restarted after the Easter break so I guess I should put in the occasional appearance on campus. It’s also that time of year when the assignment kicks in on the video production course, and some students develop an urge to point cameras at me and others for educational ends. Shen (left, from China) and Gatya (Indonesia) here anticipate that I will be able to talk about something interesting over the next ten minutes or so.

A rare appearance on the blog for my office: the sharp-eyed may note the newspaper cutting on the wall celebrating Brighton’s League Cup victory over Manchester City in 2009. And why not.

Conversation outside University Place

Thursday 12th November 2015, 3.10pm (day 1,540)

Outside University Place, 12/11/15

A shame about the signs on the door, which rather spoil the composition. So that’s 21 days in a row of shots only in Hebden Bridge or Manchester, breaking the record for this particular sequence; and seeing as the weather forecast for this weekend is pretty dreadful, thus no Lake District walk, the run will go on for a few more days yet.

Some of my new students

Monday 21st September 2015, 1.15pm (day 1,488)

New students, 21/9/15

The campus suddenly gets a hundred times busier. But this is what I’m here to do. So ignoring the fact that it was raining today, which it seems to do on this arrival day every year, it was great to meet 30 or so of the people with whom I am going to share the next 11 months or so.

My students try out the Raspberry Pi

Monday 1st December 2014, 2.50pm (day 1,194)

Raspberry Pi class, 1/12/14

The Raspberry Pi is a small computer which one can buy for £25 and is targeted at kids who can use it to learn programming. That’s it visible bottom right of centre, with all the wires connecting it up to the keyboard and monitor so you can see what you are doing on it — Mandy and Sarah Jane here were using it to compose a version of ‘Jingle Bells’ as it happens. It’s nice to get a shot of people being this engaged in a class…

Jump

Thursday 4th September 2014, 11.05am (day 1,106)

Jump, 4/9/14

I have been at a conference at my alma mater, the University of Leeds, these last couple of days. These guys are obviously happy to be here too. I wonder how the photographer’s shot compares to this one.

Huddle

Friday 13th June 2014, 12.35pm (day 1,023)

University Place, 13/6/14

The main thing that annoys me about this shot are the fire exit warning signs. The non-parallel nature of the lines at the top is explained by the fact this building is cylindrical in shape. So ends a week spent mainly on campus in Manchester.
