Rochdale station (unscheduled)

Tuesday 9th September 2025, 12 noon (day 5,129)

Rochdale station, 9/9/25

With the main rail line through Huddersfield closed this month — apparently it’s an ‘upgrade’ though that could mean anything — services are being routed along the Calder Valley line and adding further pressure to an already-creaking system. I was not supposed to have 20 minutes or so of hanging out at Rochdale station today, but here it is.

The tower over there has always impressed me — the building used to be a fire station, so presumably this is an observation tower, from the days before 999.

Incoming…

Saturday 12th October 2024, 4.25pm (day 4,797)

AFC Fylde shower, 12/10/24

That’s definitely some rain coming in. The players are about to get wet, as, I imagine, are most of the people sat in the main stand to the left, with its rather inadequate roof. At least those of us stood on the ‘East Paddock’ of AFC Fylde’s Mill Farm stadium had more satisfactory cover.

View from Broadfield Park, Rochdale

Wednesday 2nd October 2024, 5.30pm (day 4,787)

Broadfield Park view, 2/10/24

It’s been over a month since I categorised a post as ‘Landscape’, which may suggest I’ve not been getting out much, but I did find an excuse to hang out in Rochdale on this pleasant, bright evening. As might be obvious, this is taken with a very long zoom, and I like the way the shot suggests a random collection of objects kind of poking out of various bits of land (note the antenna skulking around at the very back hoping nobody notices it). The tower on the right is not that of a church, but of Rochdale’s magnificent Town Hall. What the red-and-blue arrangement to the left is — you tell me.

The morning cattle truck, at Rochdale

Thursday 23rd November 2023, 9.00am (day 4,473)

Rochdale, busy train, 23/11/23

Not only did this peak hour train turn up with half the usual number of carriages, thus assigning itself instant CTS (Cattle Truck Status) — but it was also 23 minutes late at this point, being scheduled to pass through Rochdale at 8.37. Grin and bear it? Bollocks to that, I wasn’t grinning at this point, put it that way.

The Moon and the turnstiles

Tuesday 26th September 2023, 10.00pm (day 4,415)

Spotland turnstiles, 26/9/23

Football matches are finishing later and later, now this whole ‘add on every second that players spend rolling around on the floor’ thing has kicked in. Rochdale v Chesterfield is still going on behind me at this point, even at 10pm, but I had to leave before the end to catch the train. Anyway, all of this is irrelevant to what I think is quite a pleasing shot of the moon riding on its little cloud.

Rochdale station sunset

Thursday 8th December 2022, 3.25pm (day 4,123)

Rochdale station sunset, 8/12/22

Had things turned out differently I might have been in the Balkans today, but even though they did not, I am not bothered by this — which would not have been the case ten years ago. I guess I am more attuned to the enjoyment that can be had from the local area these days. Yes, even Rochdale railway station — like the rest of the region, bathed in cold but magnificent weather.

Rochdale evening

Tuesday 1st November 2022, 9.00pm (day 4,086)

Rochdale evening, 1/11/22

Why was I in the depths of Rochdale at 9pm on a Tuesday evening? Photography reasons, of course. (OK, actually it was a football match.) The substantial tower blocks in the background are locally known as the ‘Seven Sisters’, I believe. As is often the case, going monochrome disguises some dubious sodium-lighting yellowness and the odd bit of lens flare. Plus it just seems like a black-and-white kind of place, to be honest, befitting the first day of November.

The 7:10 at Rochdale

Friday 7th October 2022, 7.10am (day 4,061)

Sleepy couple, 7/10/22

7:10am on 7/10. People have their observable routines. With teaching having started and my having 9am classes here and there, I have been catching the 6:55am train at Hebden Bridge. This becomes the 7:10 at Rochdale, and each time I’ve caught it, these two have got on. Today, they almost immediately dozed off. I sympathise. They look comfortable enough together, and good luck to them.

Morning train, Rochdale

Thursday 14th July 2022, 7.35am (day 3,976)

Passengers at Rochdale, 14/7/22

Passengers in various states of thought and repose, as the train pulled into Rochdale on the way into work. Or, I suspect for the guy immediately opposite me, home after a rather heavy night.

Moon over Rochdale

Wednesday 4th May 2022, 10:05pm (day 3,905)

Moon over Rochdale, 4/5/22

The wall separating Rochdale station from the rest of the world allows only glimpses of the nearby architecture. This shot is here more to demonstrate how the evenings are already drawing out noticeably: I’m not saying it was daylight at 10pm but it was not altogether dark either, as you can see.
