Preparing pepper soup

Saturday 6th May 2017, 2.00pm (day 2,081)

Preparing peppers, 6/5/17

There’s a very well known photograph of a pepper by Edward Weston — here it is — but he was a guy who had the time and commitment to spend days photographing this one thing and invest it with mystical qualities. I was just making soup. This is why I’ll never be a pro photographer. But I still like peppers as objects, the way they’re not as soft as they initially look they might be (like tomatoes) and inside they have these weird landscapes of seed and flesh. And the soup was nice too.

In my bedroom, evening

Monday 22nd August 2016, 6.45pm (day 1,824)

Bedroom smoke, 22/8/16

Spent part of the day in Manchester but there was little to be seen there. I prefer this enigmatic shot for today, which I feel not at all like explaining….

Big scary door

Friday 12th August 2016, 1.25pm (day 1,814)

Big scary door, 12/8/16

Doubtless there is a parent just out of shot waiting to make the strategic grab if necessary, but at some point in the future these two will be going through their big scary doors all by themselves. Good luck to them. Pictured at Manchester Victoria station, as I ventured there purely for shopping purposes — the return to work can wait another 36 hours or so.

On the Tagus

Saturday 30th July 2016, 2.40pm (day 1,801)

On the Tagus, 30/7/16

The River Tagus (in Portuguese, Rio Tejo) rises in Spain and flows west, splitting Portugal in half as it heads for the Atlantic. A few miles from the ocean, the estuary becomes very broad, but then narrows again, making an excellent natural harbour and explaining why there has been a city here since antiquity. In the background of this shot is the Torre de Belém, one of Lisbon’s most famous buildings.

Station subway

Thursday 28th April 2016, 3.05pm (day 1,708)

Subway, 28/4/16

I just like the lines of redness, sliding down the stairs until they spill out into the kid’s coat.

Wood elf, Hardcastle Crags

Sunday 17th April 2016, 11.05am (day 1,697)

Wood elf, 17/4/16

Far too lovely a morning to stay in. Fortunately we have these great pieces of countryside short walks from my house. Sping has not yet fully sprung, but it’s getting there.

Building Santa

Thursday 29th October 2015, 3.15pm (day 1,526)

Building Santa, 29/10/15

Those who have spent time in Manchester over the last few years may recognise here components of the disassembled Santa which graces Albert Square, outside the Town Hall, each year. It was being constructed today. But come on! It’s October still!!

Cat on Old Gate

Saturday 20th September 2014, 11.10am (day 1,122)

Cat, Old Gate, 20/9/14

Another grey day, but I got fed up complaining about the lack of light and decided to try harder to compensate. This cat looks rather worried by being added to the range of solitary cats which have appeared on this blog, but beyond its rather concerned expression, I like this shot.

Outside the Student Services Centre

Wednesday 11th December 2013, 10.25am (day 839)

Ramp at uni, 11/12/13

I’m still without proper photo management software and it may be into January before I get it back, so I shall have to make do. It was my students’ graduation day today, I did get photos of the event but in the end I have gone with this one — largely because of Shaun the Sheep’s appearance, which amuses me.
