(Very) Red fody

Friday 17th January 2025, 4.25pm (day 4,894)

Red fody, 17/1/25

Another bird, yes, but I’ve been trying to get a decent shot of a red fody, a.k.a. common fody (Foudia madagascariensis) since my first visit here. He — and this is definitely a male — really is that red: I’ve not tweaked the colour settings at all on this one. As the species’ Latin name suggests, they are originally from Madagascar, but have made it over to the other side of Africa by one means or another down the centuries.

Apples, with matching car

Tuesday 8th October 2024, 10.35am (day 4,793)

Apples and car, 8/10/24

I notice that almost exactly three years ago, on 7/10/21, I illustrated that there were still plums on our tree (albeit being eaten by insects). This year, those fruit were all gone by the end of August. But it’s time for the apple tree to pay off. It never matches the production rate of its neighbour, but it does just fine each year. On this shot I note also the matching car behind (yes, our kitchen is that close to the road).

The River Spree, at Lübben

Saturday 21st September 2024, 12.20pm (day 4,776)

Spree at Lübben, 21/9/24

Took myself on a day out into the countryside, specifically to the little town of Lübben, which lies about an hour’s train journey south of Berlin, further up the River Spree. Here, the river breaks into a series of creeks and canals, on which, today, a substantial number of tourists were floating around in either a self-propelled manner or on Venice-style gondolas, only piloted by gruff-looking East German types. But let’s go with this person-free shot, instead. One has to be pleased with the colour contrast here.

Red chilli with bikes

Wednesday 24th July 2024, 11.05am (day 4,717)

Red chilli with bikes, 24/7/24

This is one of those occasions where an often-seen view suddenly struck me, for the first time, as possible material for a picture. And with a long zoom, it seems to have worked out. I like the details, such as the panda face to the left. Doubtless if you are Chinese, there will be more. Though apparently, the banners read “Happy New Year” (if the very small writing at the bottom of each is to be believed): proof that this particular culture is no more fastidious about taking down the seasonal decorations than are the English.

Flowers by the roadside

Thursday 14th March 2024, 12.20pm (day 4,585)

Flowers at no. 39, 14/3/24

From blue yesterday to this vivid red (with yellow shading) today. Dampness remains a constant, though.

By the Mancunian Way

Tuesday 14th November 2023, 4.50pm (day 4,464)

Flyover and car, 14/11/23

One of those where I was trying to get the shot before the traffic resumed and didn’t manage it — but in the end, didn’t care. This is a spot regularly passed on my walk to and from work, and occasionally photographed in the past. I’ve had plenty of chances to feature it as this is the 800th shot on here to be located in Manchester. As I, technically, work here full-time, you might have thought there’d be more, but even before 2020 I certainly never came to work here five days a week. Two is more like it — an arrangement I’ve always found suitable.

Dean Clough, Halifax

Monday 24th July 2023, 1.10pm (day 4,351)

Dean Clough, 24/7/23

This street has always looked something like this; although the content of the advertising boards has probably changed. I thought about making it monochrome but the red dress was too much of a temptation not to.

Halifax goes Mediterranean

Saturday 27th May 2023, 10.45am (day 4,293)

Piece Hall, sunshine, 27/5/23

Mediterranean weather today, for sure — very pleasant. More of this weather, please — or will we get the June monsoon this year? I think the Piece Hall, restored a few years ago, also affects a kind of Mediterranean vibe, with its resemblance to a Roman forum. Either way, she was happy enough about being photographed, hence the wave.

Arriving late to the party

Friday 14th April 2023, 8.20pm (day 4,250)

Arriving at party, 14/4/23

Our neice Poppy had her 18th birthday party today, in the building ahead; we got there late, thanks to ths usual rubbish on the train line. Clare brings a dash of red to the scene, meanwhile her Dad, i.e. my father-in-law Dave, makes only his second-ever appearance on the blog in 4,250 days.

Non-binary pepper

Monday 27th February 2023, 4.05pm (day 4,204)

Non-binary pepper, 27/2/23

“I know I present as red. But inside there’s that little bit of green that’s always been on the verge of coming out.”
