The 7.50 departure to York

Friday 8th November 2013, 7.50am (day 806)

7. 50 departure, 8/11/13

My train was slightly late, but this one left just at the right time. I don’t know if this picture is quite what I expected to be when I took it, but it was always going to be today’s photo.

Sir Colin Campbell Building, University of Nottingham

Thursday 7th November 2013, 10.15am (day 805)

Campbell Building, 7/11/13

Apparently the design of this building — two more or less circular pods connected by a bridge over the road — is meant to symbolise the bridging of the gap between research and innovation. Or so I was told by a helpful information sheet in the foyer. I was here to speak at a conference – six-hour train journey for an hour or so of attendance, but it was a nice sunny day and I got some other stuff done on the train.

Burning the plates

Wednesday 6th November 2013, 7.15pm (day 804)

Burning the plates, 6/11/13

Second evening in a row at the pub – naughty, naughty. A birthday celebration for our friend Steve, these are the remnants of his very nice birthday cake going up in smoke. Yes, we could have recycled. But it’s cold out.

Ian, in the pub

Tuesday 5th November 2013, 7.45pm (day 803)

Ian, 5/11/13

As pictured in The Railway. I didn’t ask to take this picture, it’s candid, but you know, sometimes you just gotta use them anyway. Also while I’m 95% certain this guy is called Ian, I can’t be completely sure, so I hope I’ve got it right…

First frost of the winter

Monday 4th November 2013, 8.15am (day 802)

First frost, 4/11/13

The first one I’ve seen since about January 25th, the date I skipped out of last winter and buggered off to the Southern Hemisphere. A cold but beautiful morning captured as I headed for the train station to go into work.

Works lighting, Nutclough Mill extension

Sunday 3rd November 2013, 10.40am (day 801)

Extension lighting, 3/11/13

A day of sunshine and showers, which I think this shot manages to capture, as well as documenting the continuing growth of the building going up near to our house. My first full day in Hebden Bridge since October 20th, but that’s fine, I needed the rest.

Dick Knight, at Doncaster v Brighton

Saturday 2nd November 2013, 3.55pm (day 800)

Dick Knight at Doncaster, 2/11/13

Went to Doncaster Rovers v Brighton today — we won 3-1. A good day out. This picture was taken at half-time. The gentleman in focus (and there is only one) is Dick Knight, the man who became chairman of Brighton in 1997, rescuing the club from the wasteland of the Bill Archer regime. In other words, he basically saved them from oblivion, keeping them going until 2009 when he passed the torch on to current owner Tony Bloom. I think it’s brilliant that he still goes to games as an ordinary fan. I shook his hand today, just because I wanted to say thank you for what he did.

I have reached a nice round number on the blog – day 800. I have updated the Best of the Rest and Stats pages accordingly.

London Blackfriars railway station

Friday 1st November 2013, 11.45am (day 799)

Blackfriars, 1/11/13

After the party, the journey home. I do this trip quite a lot. Since they finally removed the scaffolding from around Blackfriars station earlier this year, it really does have a bloody good view, up there with Circular Quay station in Sydney — but with slightly cleaner windows.

Clare in her Halloween costume

Thursday 31st October 2013, 8.50pm (day 798)

Clare, Halloween, 31/10/13

Halloween is, of course, an over-commercial, Americanised piece of tosh, a festival of tat that in the UK risks supplanting our own home-grown folk festival at this time of year, the 5th November, Bonfire Night (and there will not be a celebration of that in Hebden Bridge this year due to ‘health and safety concerns’ — within my lifetime we may lose this event).

But none of that seemed to stop me attending a Halloween party tonight. Well, wouldn’t you, if this were your companion.

Cottage, Bowness-on-Windermere

Wednesday 30th October 2013, 9.55am (day 797)

Roses and ivy, 30/10/13

As photographed on the long uphill walk to Windermere station, as Joe & I returned from our break in the Lakes. I was back at work by the afternoon.
