Just oozin’ around

Thursday 8th May 2014, 9.00am (day 987)

Snail, 8/5/14

It’s been a good few days for wildlife shots. Believe it or not, this photo was taken at Hebden Bridge railway station — the moss here being located at the top of the wall near the place where I always stand at platform 1. No crawling around required. I love the languid way it has draped itself over the sprig of moss.

Salem centre café

Wednesday 7th May 2014, 1.15pm (day 986)

Salem centre, 7/5/14

One of the cheaper places to have lunch in the centre of Hebden Bridge. Which is what I did, today, while a rather cold and unpleasant day unfolded outside.

Goldfinch

Tuesday 6th May 2014, 4.25pm (day 985)

Goldfinch, 6/5/14

This is the shot I meant to take, but it was still luck — I didn’t even think I’d focused it properly and a microsecond after I pushed the shutter the bird was gone. Was torn between posting this one and one of a butterfly I also got today (also something of a fluke) — had I posted last night you’d have got the butterfly but this one wins this morning, so it’s in. Yes, I’d rather the sticks weren’t there — but so be it.

Expect to see more of these

Monday 5th May 2014, 10.55am (day 984)

Bicycles, 5/5/14

The first two days of the Tour de France pass through Yorkshire this year, and on Sunday 6th July the race goes right past my front door, literally. The associated publicity campaign has already begun, with a noticeable increase in the number of bicycles to be seen on any given public holiday — as today was. There will be more, I am sure.

Oscar the balloon

Sunday 4th May 2014, 12.05pm (day 983)

Oscar the balloon, 4/5/14

This was never intended to be today’s photo as it was just one of those jokey shots, but I kind of liked how it turned out. The balloon, recovered from yesterday’s celebrations at Nottingham, has been decorated in honour of Oscar Garcia, the hirsute and notably grumpy Brighton manager (see this image for instance).

The tension…

Saturday 3rd May 2014, 2.20pm (day 982)

Tension, 3/5/14

Impossible to get a shot that was both photographically interesting and which captured the drama of today’s events at the City Ground, Nottingham. This picture is as good as I could manage to capture the tension that was released by Leo Ulloa’s 92nd minute goal, one already burned into the memories of all Brighton & Hove Albion fans I am sure. If you want to read more about that, go to this page. I am too drained. Seagulls!!

Blackbird and blossom

Friday 2nd May 2014, 4.45pm (day 981)

Blackbird and blossom, 2/5/14

More avifauna. And a pic that shows we are at least a couple of weeks ahead with various signs of the seasons this year, to compare with last (see 29/5/13).

Wildfowl wanderings

Thursday 1st May 2014, 10.45pm (day 980)

Wildfowl wandering, 1/5/14

Why did the ducks and Canada goose cross the road? To get to the other side, of course.

Etienne Wenger

Wednesday 30th April 2014, 12.25pm (day 979)

Etienne Wenger, 30/4/14

On average, you probably haven’t heard of this guy, but in my field he’s quite a big name. We are lucky to have him as a part-time academic at the University of Manchester. I’ve heard him talk before, he’s a very expressive speaker, so I knew it wouldn’t be too hard to catch him in some kind of animated pose. The ‘practice’ on the board behind it also makes the shot — if you know the work he does.

New Market, Manchester

Tuesday 29th April 2014, 9.45am (day 978)

New Market, 29/4/14

One of Manchester city centre’s most obscure streets; the recruitment agency you see to the right is the only premises with this as its address, I am sure. But I often pass, and sometimes walk up, it on my way to the office. I like this shot because of the ghostly quality of the female figure and the subtlety of the light.
