On platform 2

Monday 3rd November 2014, 8.00am (day 1,166)

Platform two, 3/11/14

Another beautiful morning, which we are becoming quite used to. When the light hits Hebden Bridge station right, it’s worth hanging around for — this train was going to Manchester, but for the sake of an extra 10 minutes until the next one, I stayed and got the shot.

Waiting for the morning bus

Friday 12th September 2014, 7.50am (day 1,114)

Bus stop, Stavanger, 12/9/14

Last day in Stavanger. I was waiting for my bus back to the airport, and on the other side of the road, these guys were waiting for their bus to, wherever. I’m home now — and hopefully, so are they.

The Hebden Water

Tuesday 19th August 2014, 8.15am (day 1,090)

Hebden Water, 19/8/14

Tempting as it is to simply stick up a picture of the scoreboard that concluded tonight’s football match at Elland Road (Leeds Utd 0, Brighton & Hove Albion 2 – yes!)… this is the best non-partisan shot I got today. A beautiful morning in town.

Sackville Street

Wednesday 26th March 2014, 8.00am (day 944)

Sackville Street, 26/3/14

Talk about a polarised day. The morning — glorious, beautiful sunshine, pleasantly mild. Then I arrived at work at the unusually early time of 8.15, emerged again 9 hours later, and it had become thoroughly chilly, grey and damp. There is a reason all my photos today were taken in the morning.

Anyway, here is the third of my mini-series — guaranteed 5-in-a-row of Manchester. I love the various lines on this shot. This is taken at the point Sackville Street meets Canal Street — the lady is just stepping onto the bridge that takes Sackville Street over the canal.

Waiting for the Manchester train

Monday 10th March 2014, 8.55am (day 928)

Waiting for train, 10/3/14

When awaiting the 8:56 morning service to Manchester, stand by the first station sign board beyond the edge of the canopy. That’s where the front coach stops and there are plenty of seats. Because it was a gloriously sunny morning, my spot was occupied by these guys today, but their cute dog caught great rim-light so I let them off.

Roofers, Wednesday morning

Wednesday 26th February 2014, 8.50am (day 916)

Roofers, 26/2/14

This house sits to the left of the bridge over the Rochdale Canal on the way to Hebden Bridge station and is becoming the most-photographed exterior of any building on this blog, including my own house (which frequently gets in as an interior, but not exterior). There are reasons for this — on any given sunny morning it looks great. Having these guys climbing up onto it today was just a bonus.

Oxford Street, Manchester

Thursday 19th December 2013, 9.40am (day 847)

Oxford Street, 19/12/13

I’ll post this now partly because I am on a machine that works properly (not consistently true for me at the moment, nor will it be until into January now), but also because the sun has long disappeared behind clouds: this beautiful morning light was, unlike on Tuesday, all we got today. So I doubt I’ll get a better shot later. Having done this walk a lot, I know where the sun shines in Manchester city centre on a winter’s day by now, and at around this time on Oxford Road/Oxford Street (its continuation), it shines right down the road as if it was the avenue of a stone circle like Avebury. In fact, considering it’s the solstice on Saturday, perhaps I am on to something there.

The River Calder, near Hebden Bridge station

Tuesday 10th December 2013, 8.40am (day 838)

River Calder, 10/12/13

Another beautiful morning in a long run of good weather (proving the idiotic newspapers wrong with their predictions of a dire early winter). The bridge carries Mayroyd Lane over the river Calder, near the railway station. Another oft-passed scene, but it has managed not to appear thus far on the blog.

University Place and Oxford Road

Monday 25th November 2013, 10.10am (day 823)

Oxford Road, 25/11/13This will be a long run of pictures from only Hebden Bridge and Manchester. These will continue to be rich seams for photography as long as the light is right, which it certainly was today. And the other astonishing, perhaps even unrepeatable feature of this shot is that there is NO TRAFFIC. Just for a moment.

Scaffolding on Albert Street

Saturday 23rd November 2013, 9.50am (day 821)

Scaffolding, 23/11/13

Despite spending several hours in Wigan today, a location that has yet to make its debut on this blog, any shots that might have arisen from there had already been trumped by this morning’s opportunities at home, proof that just about anything can turn into a decent photo as long as the light is right. And boy, this morning, was it right.
