Nightjar in red

Friday 3rd October 2025, 7.40pm (day 5,153)

Nightjar in red, 3/10/25

The Nightjar bar sits under the Picture House so is a logical place to go for a pre-movie drink, as was the case this Friday night. And a word out to the movie, too — Spinal Tap 2, which, pleasingly, was extremely funny and in no way diminishes the original, something definitely not always the case for many such sequels.

Friday evening crew

Friday 7th February 2025, 5.45pm (day 4,915)

Now I’m at home, the risk is run of having nothing particularly interesting or different to photograph — and that was certainly the case today. With apologies to my friends gathered around the fire for the usual Friday evening transition, who are of course interesting (most of the time) but maybe not all that different, at least, not to me.

Stan the stickerer

Friday 22nd November 2024, 5.45pm (day 4,838)

Stan the Stickerer, 22/11/24

You might not be able to tell this from the photos posted but, work-wise, it’s been a very busy week. Time to let off some steam on the Friday evening. Of course, because we are all middle-aged these days, these high jinks amounted to little more than Stan surreptitiously stickering the back of Mark’s hat, but that is about our level these days.

After the movie

Friday 27th October 2023, 10.25pm (day 4,446)

Leaving the movie, 27/10/23

Clare’s birthday was yesterday but it passed without comment on here. We took each other out tonight though, including to the movies to see The Creator. Verdict? Well, it’s a damn fine-looking movie, that’s undeniable but a) it doesn’t always make a great deal of sense and b) in true Hollywood style, it takes some complex philosophical and ethical issues and treats them as mere trivia. As I followed C up the aisle on the way out, and the other two guys went through the box of old posters, I was none the wiser as to the point of it all.

Clare at the bar (Trades Club)

Friday 29th September 2023, 9.10pm (day 4,418)

Trades Club bar, 29/9/23

A Friday night out, in the kind of lighting which makes taking photos with my point-and-click gear an activity dependent mostly on luck. Great action shots of people dancing don’t really emerge. But this photo of Clare getting the first beers of the evening is at least notable for this being the point when she overtakes Joe as the most-often featured person on here — a status that, all things considered, she will almost certainly now retain.

Out (in Jamestown)

Friday 19th November 2021, 10.15pm (day 3,739)

The Muleyard, 19/11/21

Friday night — and I’m out! In every sense of the term. So were plenty of other people who were on the flight, ten days ago. The Muleyard pub in Jamestown hosted ex-pats and locals alike, and we all celebrated being part of the land of the living.

Weekend supplies

Friday 22nd January 2021, 4.20pm (day 3,438)

Wine and more wine, 22/1/21

If anyone in the UK has any better ideas for what to do with this Friday evening I’d love to hear them. Have a good weekend y’all.

Friday night by the willows

Friday 18th December 2020, 4.35pm (day 3,403)

Lit willows, 18/12/20

Another Friday night passes. Not just an ordinary Friday either, but the last working day of 2020, the start of the run-up to Christmas, ‘Mad Friday’, it goes by many names. And here we are, trying to feel human and social while sat by the river looking at the willows, here illuminated by headlights shining from the car park above our heads. It’s life, Jim, but not as we know it.

Not-Friday

Friday 11th December 2020, 5.00pm (day 3,396)

Friday evening, 11/12/20

Tough brief today, to document a day spent marking, and in meetings, and no light, just a grey December flatness. And we remain in not-quite-life, of course. Everything that Authority feels it cannot control, it has shut down. Bojo the Clown still can’t do something that he’s been campaigning for for half a decade now. On such a day, a shot of, basically, nothing seems appropriate to the mood. Best I managed, anyway.
