Returning from my week working away was encouraged by the chance to join Clare at her photo shoot at Alt.studios in Manchester. I should in fact call it ‘our’ shoot because I also had my first experience of being in front of a professionally-wielded camera. Whether you get to see the results or not depends on how well I know you.
Our Clare can occasionally be aroused by football, which is why Morecambe FC (currently of League Two) have featured more than once on the blog in the past. There she is in her MFC kit watching them lose — undeservedly I would add — to the supposedly far superior Newcastle United in tonight’s televised match.
That’s an illusion going on with Joe by the way. He’s not really got a pint of beer in front of him with a straw in it.
And so, after one more morning of definite, but rather vague and low-level, looking back — it’s probably some mid-life crisis or something — we all left my old stamping ground for points more northern and, to tell the honest truth, far more interesting. It’s been nice to go back, confirm the continuing existence of places remembered, but there’s no need to come back again.
Was genuinely struggling for inspiration today, not even thinking about taking a photo until about 4.30, but the family came through for me with a late opportunity. It’s grainy because it’s got a very long zoom on it, I was taking a photo of something else (I forget what) when I caught sight of them larking about.
I took another picture I quite liked this morning, at Leeds station; but it was kinda brown, and the last two have also been very brown. So here is some colour, not to mention shape, on the blog courtesy of the wife’s legs.
Clare and Joe’s last full day in Australia before the end of their break here, so let’s feature them on today’s picture. Taken with the old Fujifilm camera with which I took the first 366 photos on this blog: it still takes a decent shot but the zoom is half-dead so I do need to repair the other one.
This is a tree that grows in the Botanic Gardens, and was planted in the 1870s. It is a marvellous tree, which sends creepers down from its branches to seek more sustenance, these eventually growing into substantial new trunks from the top down. The biggest banyan tree in the world is in India, and covers more than 1.5 hectares, with more than 1,000 distinct trunks. This one isn’t anywhere near as big but if you ask me is still the coolest tree in Brisbane.
And, oh yeah, the family turned up this morning… for three weeks 🙂
On 30th December 1972, Carol and Dave – Clare’s parents, thus, my parents-in-law – were married. Which makes today their ruby (40th) wedding anniversary. At least according to family legend, the wedding was held in the winter so as not to interfere with the sea bass fishing season – because that’s the kind of guy Dave is. Perhaps it’s true; I certainly half-believe it.
Anyway, a very nice celebration was had by all, and I took a very large number of photos (300+ today); picking one was not easy but this is my choice. Clare’s gran (she has both, still: this is Dave’s mum) is quite frail these days and could only come to the party for a short time, but this is a nice photo to capture them both together.
I don’t really do Hallowe’en myself, but others do, and it’s a good photo opportunity at least. Like, for this tender mother-and-son shot. Aren’t they cute.
